The first Far Cry is a lot of fun, and still has, what I would call, acceptable graphics. If you've never played that, it's worth a shot.

STALKER SoC
FEAR 1
Bioshock
Painkiller
PREY
DOOM3
Quake4

Beat: Quake 4, FEAR, Doom 3

I tried FEAR 1 again as I remember having a lot of fun playing it - but it does get repetitive.

I got stuck at the very end of the stage when the mutants would just run me over!

Singularity had a good story, and was fun IMO.

The half life series is excellent as well, just in case you have been living under a rock and haven't played them yet.

And of course, there is always return to castle wolfenstein. An oldie but a goodie.

RTCW - beat the single player, played the heck out of ET . . . I'm hearing good things about Singularity - I might have to check it out!

Been awhile since I've beaten it (LOVED the game, though, and was shocked at how different FC2 was, thus could never get into it), but I do recall relying on the shotty a lot in order to deal huge damage to those mutants.

A-must strategy, especially if playing on the hardest difficulty level.

So I ended up picking up Bioshock 2 for $5 - to be honest I have 1 1st Bioshock and Fallout 3 but it just didn't grab me like other games - I suppose I'm looking for more action-oriented FPS' - and I was hooked on Fallout 1 and 2 so 3 just pales in comparison (different style of game, really) - but I'll be giving them a shot!

And I'm still toying with the idea of picking up Far Cry again - until the endgame level, I was really enjoying the game (but then again, I remember having fun with FEAR and boy oh boy was it BORING!).

If you are willing to go 3rd person then Dead Space 1/2 and Mass Effect 1/2 are great.
I got Dead Space 1 off Steam for like $4.50

3rd person games I equate more with console gaming (with few exceptions - like 3/4 isometric view RPGS, RTSs, etc) - I ended up getting Arkham Asylum for the 360 after trying the Steam version, I have Mass Effect for the 360 (knowing that it's almost an RPG-styled shooter), etc.

Duke Nukem 3D if you've never played it.

I played it for the first time a few months ago, and it's still damn fun for being a 15 year old game.

I . . . appreciate that, but that's what you'd "recommend"? Gems like "Jurassic Park: Trespasser" and "KISS - Psycho Circus - the Nightmare Child"?
I could just as well go to Wikipedia/Google and look up FPS for PC!

Surely you just.

You can indeed go on Google, or Wikipedia, or just go on YouTube and check out game-play videos of the titles you're interested in or curious to know more about. I posted the list so that you could just pick up the ones you might want to look more into by yourself, that's about it, take it like a list of ingredients to get at the grocery... I don't know man.

Alright so erm... ok, out of them I would recommend that you play Borderlands (with or without DLCs, but with them is better, in my opinion), the original BioShock, original Half-Life along with Blue Shift, the very underrated Dark Messiah, the nearly-forgotten Prey, I'd also go with Quake 4, Crysis, Crysis Warhead and the original AvP. There, a more precise list of recommendations. As a side note I own 90% of the games on the list, and I played (not finished) them all.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Borderlands is on sale right now on Steam, forgot about that.
