Recommend for me a single-player FPS

I already have:

- Borderlands + exp. packs
- Team Fortress 2
- CS:S
- L4D 1/2

So I'm fairly good on multiplayer FPS games - but I do prefer the single player/co-op games as opposed to head-to-head; recommend any single player FPS's that are fun to play (that's been released in the last few years)!

Depends on what you find fun, I find the Stalker games with the complete mods to be quite a bit of fun.

Definitely STALKER. It's FPS / RPG, but a lot of fun. Metro 2033 was pretty good too, as is Bioshock.

Mass Effect isn't a FPS, but if you enjoy the games above, that might be worth a look in the future.

Fun?

Painkiller.

I might give that a shot - I've heard good things about it.

I do have that, but as I'm playing on a laptop with a med-level GPU (Nvidia GT 230M) it chugs along even at medium settings.

Crysis 1 is a pretty good SP game. Never tried Warhead, but I heard it was okay too.

One word: SecuROM. I'd love to try it even with lower settings, but no thanks.

Try the demo for Painkiller first - I bought it off Steam without realizing there was a demo solely because I had heard good things, and I didn't like it at all. It's basically just a Quake 3 mod.

I'd try BioShock. Should run okay if you turn the settings down a bit. The Call of Duty games have decent single player as well, although they are a bit short. Mass Effect 1 is an RPG that plays like a third person shooter, while Mass Effect 2 is more like a third person shooter with some light RPG elements.

Singularity had a good story, and was fun IMO.

The half life series is excellent as well, just in case you have been living under a rock and haven't played them yet.

And of course, there is always return to castle wolfenstein. An oldie but a goodie.

Another "L4D'ish" co-op game to look into is Killing Floor, though I personally have not tried it yet so I don't know what the gameplay is actually like other than being a co-op/MP game (give me another free weekend Steam!).

Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines, it is like Deus Ex with better graphics, sexier women and you are a vampire instead of a cyborg. But, it is linear (which, IMO, is a good thing).

If you want non-linear, check out STALKER: SOC, but install the Oblivion Lost mod first, the game without mods is garbage.

Metro 2033 is good for a while but I got fed up with all the mutant werewolf sections.
STALKER is an unfinished pile of embarrassing nonsense. I got this for £10 on Steam the other month and it's shoddiness actually offended me.
FEAR gets very repetitive very quickly.
Crysis 1 is pretty average.
Crysis 2 is quite good.
Bioshock is mostly excellent.

They're certainly older than "the last few years" but the Max Payne games are great for single player, though 3rd person not 1st. Certainly would run fine on your GPU.

Ravenholm - its a free add-on for the Valve Source engine. I think I downloaded it from filefront.

Portal 2 unlocks next week. If you pre-purchase portal 2, you get portal 1 for free.

Quake II - some of the maps can get confusing, the weapons are iffy, one of the most over hyped games of all time, but still worth a play through.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl - very difficult game, Steam has it on sale from time to time.

Half-Life - graphics are dated, but story plot is great

Half-Life 2 - good, but not great like the original.

Half-Life 2: Episode 2 - lots of action, good story plot.

Doom - get the zdoom add-on to improve graphics.

I actually liked far cry 2 a lot, it was a short game, but I had fun playing it.

Which STALKER? SoC I thought was awful, even with the mods. The UI felt awkward, like when you clicked on things they didn't respond correctly or something. I figured it was just my computer. I could never get the hang of it either, I needed to shoot the enemies 20 times in the head just to get a kill, yet they were destroying me, even after upgrading my gear as much as I could. I've never played CoP though.

I've finished Singularity some weeks ago.
Awesome experience from a FPS. Excellent story and atmosphere, freaking scary at times. Nice gameplay.

A must have.

I agree 100%.

I figure I am about 1/3 way through it. But so far, it has been excellent.

Oh, and I also have the Painkiller Black Edition set I think its called. It has all 3 Painkiller games on it. It is excellent as well.

Some people just dont like Painkiller. But I find it very fun, looks good, good game play. Good all around games. I think I paid like $20 for the 3-game set. Worth it.

Give it a look. It has some of the biggest giant boss battles I have seen. Almost skyscraper size bosses. Lot's of fun.

If you know nothing about Painkiller, here are some trailers.

And its available on STEAM.

PREY is also very good. Should run OK on your lappy, and is an excellent shooter.

I also enjoyed Hells Highway.

YOU TAKE THAT BACK. 😉

In all honesty, yeah, Painkiller is fantastic. If you're into the "mindless, fast-paced, shoot-everything-that-moves" type of FPS, then get Painkiller. Serious Sam is very similar and is equally fun.

But I don't know what kind of FPS you're looking for. If you want something with a more serious, dramatic tone, then may I suggest Metro 2033. My favorite singleplayer shooter of 2010.

I have never, ever had any kind of motion sickness from an FPS before but SoC gave me a bizarre feeling with that ridiculous headbobbing. The UI was horrendous, the mouse pointer painfully slow, the run speed was like driving a car, and the map was the one of the worst I have ever seen.

The 2009 Complete Mod helped with some of it but it was an abortion of a release.

I've tried to get into STALKER SoC but I've never been able to get far. I've completed Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat (and I liked BOTH of them), but the first game (even with the Complete mod) just hasn't been able to hold my attention.

I recommend Metro 2033; if you have a powerful rig then the game can be really attractive. It has a serious, interesting story with some very chilling and somber moments/environments; the gameplay is more deliberate than other FPSs which provides a nice change of pace.

Bioshock 1 & 2 are both on sale for $5 each on steam.

Only played the first one was really good. The second one is suppose to be even better, I'll be getting it tonight.
