Recommend Decent, compatible AGP Card for Asus A8V Deluxe MOBO?

I think I might have a compatability issue with my Powercolor Radeon 9800 128 MB card and wonder if anyone can recommend a good card that will definitely work with my MOBO. My card works but I cannot get XP installed and with the help of others on the forum have ruled out other issues that may be causing the install problem.

Here is the current build:
64 Athlon 3500+
ASUS A8V Deluxe MOBO
2x 512 Rosewill PC3200
Samsung 1614N ATA133 160
NEC 3520A DVD
ALPS FDD
Powercolor 9800Pro128 AGP
Zalman 400PS
Lian-Li PC-60USB

Light gaming and video editing
For light gaming you could easily get by with any AGP car based on the 6600 or 6600GT. Video editing is 2D, so any card will work fine, you don't need anything special.

What kind of budget are you on?

If it's the videocard for sure, then I'd agree with 6600/6600gt if you want to stay away from the ATI 9xxx line.

The 6600gt is a great card and would perform very well with the specs of your system. I can't say with 100% confidence that it would be compatable if you had problems with the 9800 though.

EDIT: I skimmed very quickly through your post where you got a PM about the videocard. Did you try a different videocard in the system and get XP to load?

I wouldn't go out and buy a new card before you check with another AGP card to make certain that it's the issue.

It depends on what kind of games you play. If you don't play FPSs then a 6600GT will do but if you do play FPSs you'll be disappointed in it. I'd recommend a Radeon X800XL. It has 16-pipes but is clocked lower than the X800XT/PE.🙂

Some professional video cards offer features that will speed-up video editing, but those are quite expensive. Consumer-level vid cards do virtually nothing for video editing which leaves the CPU to do all the work, making it a moot question.

For games, prevailing wisdom agrees with the above recommendations. For video editing you would want a pro video card (mega-$$$), a dedicated video processing (not graphics) card (again, mega-$$$) or a more powerful CPU.
