She looking for something in the 50-55" range for around $600. She doesn't game or anything. :) She just wants a decent tv. I know she likes Sony but what other brands do you recommend? Any particular spec that is a must (for watching tv)?

I recommend buying at costco if she can.
I bought my TV at amazon, and after about 1 and 1/2 years TV decided to start shutting itself off and won't turn back on unless you unplug it and plug it back in ... (It's a Visio)
Visio only warrantied it for 1 year, Costco would have extended warranty to 2 years had I bought from them.

Shop for Samsung or LG. Just check the local stores and cross reference the available models for price matching.

I would say Panasonic if we were still buying plasmas. Steer clear of any other manufacturers...including Sony.

I recently bought a 55" TCL tv and love it. 400 bucks from costco and 29 for another 2 years. Love it.

There are a bunch of 4K TV's in that price range and size, though. Vizio, TCL, Sharp, Samsung, LG... hard to go wrong with any of them these days, just look at reviews to make sure you aren't getting a flawed model.

It's crazy how cheap even the 4K TVs have gotten now. To think I paid like 2 grand for my 1080p 55" when I moved in my house. Now they are pretty much giving them away lol.

I upgraded mine in the 2016 sales in November. I had a 6 series Samsung 55", I went to the 8 series just because it uses the higher end panels in their line. I went back to Costco 2 times to get money back as I knew it would go on sale, it came out in the $1000 area total. Last time I looked the newer 8 series from them, 55" was $879, then tax and the small fee get added.

Definitely makes me want to upgrade just because I can. I think I might even have room to wall mount a 75 inch! Need to actually remove my fireplace first so I can put the couch there, so it's in front of the TV. My living room setup is crap right now until I do that. I don't even spend any time there.
