Skip the iphone, unless you don't plan on making calls with it. Coverage is terrible. 2 in 5 calls my friends get alone in NYC, dropped. Phones nice, carrier, terrible.

I am on Verizon now, and I do like it, but I can switch so that option is open. Budget is fine, just nothing extremely expensive.

I want all the cool stuff a PDA has that is fashionably sleek.... With a good camera!

If you guys wouldn't mind naming some of the big boys and cool stuff that I can Google, it would be appreciated. Cheers! :)

Score an iPhone, if you don't like it, take it back during the grace period.

(Disclaimer-I own $100K of AAPL)

I'm also on verizon. If you are hell bent on an iphone, wait for it to come to verizon next year. If not, then pick up the new Samsung Omnia 2 or the HTC Touch 2. Both are phenomenal smartphones.

The iPhone is not coming to Verizon, different signal technology CDMA/GSM. Verizon hinted that there were talks, but they didn't work out.

I've been looking around the web and the Curve 2 and Storm 2 seem to be right around the corner. And the Tour looks really nice. By the way, I'm on a Venus right now... Yep, you read that right.

I have an iPhone and absolutely love it. My GF does as well. That being said, certain areas have poor ATT reception. I am in the DC/NOVA area and the reception has never been a problem. If you live in an area that gets good ATT reception, I would say to get the iPhone for sure.

We'll see when ATT's contract is up.

No such thing as a "Curve 2", and there is no CDMA 8900 series as yet. The Tour is a great device if you like KB's and stick with Verizon. There are may new BB's due for release in the next two months, so maybe just hang on and get an idea of which suits.

Verizon seems to have the worst smartphones of all the carriers. I personally do not like the iPhone, Apple maintains too much control over it for me.

I hear the Touch Pro 2 is a very nice device, but it is a little pricey even with the 2yr contract. The Omnia 1 seems like it is was pretty 'meh' but I haven't heard anything concrete on the Omnia 2. Google searchs have it looking really pretty, but I don't see an availability date. Probably won't be cheap either.

It means no FREE internet access. You'd have to pay for a data plan.

The HTC Imagio does look really good. Camera is really good. Right now Tour and Imagio are on my list.

I read the Imagio uses Windows 6.5? If someone could comment on exactly how important the phone's OS is? What are the pros and cons of the Windows OS compared to the BB OS? Thanks a lot

And please keep recommending some top notch phones. Thanks

If you plan to stick with Verizon, then the Tour or the Storm 2 are really your only choices. My friend has the Tour, and he likes it, but I find the screen to be too small. I read somewhere that the Storm 2 is going to have the moving screen the the 1st Storm has. If you can stand it, then you might want to wait.

At&t of course has the iPhone. If I were to buy a phone today, that's what I'd buy. At&t network may have issues in your area though, so you should look into that.

Sprint has the Palm Pre. I played with it, and I liked it, but compared to my iPhone, it felt cheap. They also have the HTC Hero on the way. It's based on Android and is due out on the 11th.

T-mobile has the G1 & myTouch, which are also Android phones. My problem with Android is that the apps don't seem to be coming like I thought they would. Their app store as been out for a year, but there are only about 8500 apps.

My process..

Only Verizon and Sprint have coverage I want. I've had both and prefer Sprint because of price and features.

smart phones-
Pre - cool looking os, but no soft keyboard and unusable hard keyboard.
Hero - not out yet but looks very nice in previews. like capacitive screen, trackball/pointer thingy, would prefer higher rez screen tho.
blackberries - nice but I prefer larger screen and keyboard.
Touch Pro2 - what I got. like everything but the weight. winmo is best os for pc person, I think.
Imagio - also very nice. is this the Diamond 2 ? If it is I wish Sprint had it because I might give up the Touch Pro2 hard keyboard for a little less weight. HTC's soft keyboard on the Hero, Touch Pro2, Imagio, is really great.

They're not going to make an iPhone with a CDMA chip just for Verizon. Why would they when the entire world uses GSM?

OP, I would check out the Nokia N900. It uses the Maemo OS (which is Linux based so all Linux apps should work) and it's been getting some rave previews. I am strongly considering getting it.

they would have to :
a) let verizon make accessories for the iphone
or
b) let verizon brand/cobrand existing apple accessories

neither will happen.

I'm pretty sure I'm sticking with Verizon.

With that said, rumors have it that HTC Predator might be coming to VZW at the end of October (I think).

Touch Pro 2 seems very good. My only problem is that it runs on Win 6.1 The Win 6.5 is coming out next week on the Imagio.

What is with all the hype over the Android phones? I'm most likely going to just get the Imagio next week, but everyone is going crazy over the HTC Predator.

And I just read another rumor saying the Sholes/TAO or w/e is called is coming to VZW on December 1st.

@Tom Yes the Imagio is the Diamond 2
