recommend a router

I'm looking into getting a router for my cable net connection. Which brand/model is best?

If ya'll need any other info on my setup, let me know.

Just get a retail wireless router (im guessing probably need wireless) with 'b/g/higher' capabilities. If you have problems, just exchange it for a different brand. I have a Dlink, works fine. But my roommate had the same one whose wireless just didnt work properly.
So i would recommend you start off with netgear. Or linksys, whichever ends up a better deal.
 
I was using a Linksys WRT54G with sveasoft firmware. The software has a lot of flexibility such as being able to boost tranmit power. Yesterday I switched back to my Netgear WGR614v4 as I like the software considerably better and it is easier to set up and control various parameters.

Both are good to excellent routers, it just depends on what you are looking for. For increased range the Linksys WRT54G is better, if you boost transmit power. The Netgear is better for parental controls and monitoring web sites visited by children, as it will even email you a list of all sites visited by each assigned IP.

I would buy a WRT54G being as BestBuy has it on sale for $40 right now. If you want to go the free route I would suggest installing a copy of HyperWRT on it. But if you feel like spending $20 Sveasoft's Talisman is a pretty slick firmware release too. For me the thing that shines about Talisman is now that I have almost zero transmit errors recorded on my laptops.

Im looking for the same thing but I want a wired router. And I want one that does not reset when I scan the quake servers like the ones did 5 years ago. Any router still do? I want firewalling ability too.

Plus I need 4 to 6 ports.
 
OK... Are you saying that a 3rd party vendor supplies the firmware for the Linksys WRT54G router???

Well I just bought the WRT54G and am NOT pleased. Its a giant step backwards from my SMC barricade. Its noobitized. I cant assign IP based on MAC. WTF is that?? So my linux box is supposed to grab some random IP address on a daily basis. Its just dumb.

i got the wireless since i have a wireless AP anyway I figure i would sell that and replace 2 devices with 1. But this wireless router seems to skimp on the router side. Any way to get better features on this thing or should I just buy a different one?
 
good call mdcrab. I went with the Wireless Netgear. Got everything i want but the logging is kind of poor. It will do.
 
Taking netgear back. Got Zyxel P-334WT. never had this brand before. Its got everything i want and the logging is uber. Way out of linksys and netgears league. This was the buy I was looking for!
