Recommend a router please

Those arent true routers (not like the Cisco/Network Foundaries/Seven ones), those are Internet gateways. Linksys is pretty good, but they were selling a D-Link 4 port switch with DSL/Cable "router" for $30 with a $10 rebate. I picked one up and its running 24/7 quite well.

Either way it should be fine.

I 2nd the D-link. Great write up over at Practically Networked. Cheap and works great. Good feature set.
Like it better than my old SMC.

Unless you are looking for some exact feature- they all seem pretty good these days.

For $20, i wonder how d-link even makes money. It can also double as a 4 port 10/100 switch (+ the one WAN port). It has a nice GUI admin setup that features a firewall and some basic admin tools.

The only gripe is that it runs pretty hot with all 4 ports connected.

I like the Netgears. I would avoid Asante. People like to argue between Linksys and Netgear, I have heard reasons for both.

dszd0g,
Why would you avoid the Asante? It is practicallynetworked recommended with an 88% user approval rating. I moved to the FR3004LC after my Ugate UMAX-3000 died on me and I prefer the Asante.
I don't mean to sound offended, I am just wondering if you know something that I don't (I frequently recommend this router to friends and would not want to do so if there is something wrong with it)

I have had lots of problems with them at companies I have consulted for. The main problem I have encountered is that they power cycle. Replacing with another brand always solve the problem. I have worked more with their higher end equipment then their lower end. But I would assume if their higher end equipment is crap, that their lower end wouldn't be better. It might be a false assumption though. Either way, it is not a brand I recommend.

I just remember one of the fun(ny) experienciences with an Asante router.

At one place I worked for a while we had one floor using an Asante router connect to the WAN Cisco routers in another building. The Asante would regularly stop working. It would be on, but it would not be sending any traffic. It became the daily task of one of the IT team to walk out to the network closet and power cycle the Asante, "time to cycle the Asante" we would say.

We had a support contract with Asante and they first sent us a firmware update and finally sent a tech out. He tried swapping it with another one, but it had the same problem. When it was finally in the budget we swapped it out for another brand (I don't remember what we ended up putting in, it wasn't my decision. I think it started with an X.) Then the problem went away.

I have the SMC Barricade and it's been good so far for me after I flashed the BIOs to the latest version. Has a print server and backup option for external modem in case your cable/DSL goes down.

I have the SMC 4 port with print server, it's always run great for me. I didn't try any other brands, so I can't compare it to anything, but mines been running for over a year (24/7) with no problems.

I definately recommend the SMC barricade. My friend owns one and loves it so, I got one and it's been great! Easy to set up, easy to upgrade (when it comes to firmware). And, it lasts! I highly recommend going for this router! SMC!

Yeah, that's a switch you are looking at. A multiport bridge. Should work fine. A router works up at Layer 3 of the OSI model, switch at Layer 2. Even a hub (Layer 1) should work. Just hook them up in star topology.

I've been using the SMC 7004AWBR WiFi router since it came out in early 2001. It's been on 24/7 and has never burped. Easy to configure via the web browser interface.

Holy crap. whatever you do don't buy an SMC. Over the last week the wan has been down longer than up! DAm it's a piss off haveing to restart it all the time

I'd recommend the SMC barricade one. I got it recently and it works like a charm. Only one small thing i noticed was that the net would be down for like 2mins, than i would have to click connect through the web site to try to get it back on. I think thats what you guys call a burp.

About the last post, you should contact your ISP about the wan being down man. It has nothing to do with your router.

Just bought the dlink di-704P on sale at Fry's. Seems decent compared to the compusa (rebadged SMC) once that I already had, but the print server is flakey. You have to use their custom software, which only runs in windows, and only works most of the time.

I think you are talking about uPnP support. Read the review about uPnP at Tom's hardware, before you pick a router based on it.
