I know theres people on this board that keep up with cpu's alot better than me so what cpu would you recommend for me.

I play absolutely no games and if I was ever to get interested in playing games I highly doubt I would be playing the latest and greatest.
I use photoshop for my dslr and will probably start to get into video editing as well, looking at buying sony vegas (maybe)
Outside of that i just surf the web and watch hd movies along with the normal word programs and things like that. Nothing too intensive.

Probably something like a Core i5 3570/3570K or a Core i7 3770/3770K. It depends on how much you actually need. Casual users of Photoshop/Sony Vegas won't need the amount of processing power from the CPUs I've listed.

What's your budget? Are you interested in overclocking at all?

An i5-3570 would be a sound bet. (The K version is only interesting if you want to overclock it.)

I'd also make sure you pick up an SSD, and plenty of RAM. Those can really help Photoshop workloads.

No real budget however i dont want the most expensive cpu just because its 10% better at 2x the price, so for me I think an i7 will be out of the running. Im also not in a hurry.Ive never overclocked before but im not against it either. Ssd and a lot of ram will be a certainty in the new build

if ya have a microcenter near you, they have a 3770k for $230 and a 3570k for $170, the non-k versions are more expensive.

How about the FX-8350?
For a low-cost option, v. an i7, maybe. The Intels will be significantly faster when not waiting on multithreaded filters, which will account for a good bit of the time using the computer.

Another thing to consider would be the 1155 Xeons. Many mobos support them, and they trade OC capability for i7 stock performance at a lower price.

How about the FX-8350?

In this case it sounds like even an FX-8350 would be complete overkill.

The most challenging app being entertained is Sony Vegas and that is a maybe/sorta/someday possibility which means even if it comes to be used he isn't going to be loading up his computer 20hrs a day with it.

A quad-core with good single-threaded performance is all he's going to need when coupled with a good SSD. So either go for a 2500k/3550k (2500k if he can find a cheap one) or an FX-4300/6300.

Even then I wonder if it is going to be complete overkill. I use my laptop for 100% of all my photoshopping needs (I still use an old PS 6.0 version) and it just as an i5-2410M (dual-core SB w/HT @ 2.3GHz). I've even transcoded a few movies on it with TMPGenc and it didn't croak or take forever, still got the job done.

So the OP would probably be fine with a $100 cpu of any brand and any clockspeed, the SSD is what will make his daily use (web stuff as he mentioned) seem fast and snappy vs slow and laggy IMO.

Maybe even an i3 3xxx? It could be a solid CPU for that job.

Piledriver doesn't make much sense here as you'd have to buy a seperate gpu. Surely a a10-5800k or a i3-3xxx would be more than enough to get the job done well?

I would have to go with the Intel® Core™ i5-3570K even if you are not planning overclocking right away since you will still have that option in the future.

I use PS almost every day, and there's no substitute for grunt. Get a Core i5 3570k with an SSD and at least 8GB of RAM and you'll be quite happy.

Dont worry about overkill. I might as well enjoy the computer for a few years. I rarely rarely upgrade. In any case im just being honest with the programs that I use. Basically my needs come from enjoying shooting with dslr's and thats where I like to put my money into. So with video and increased megapixels I do want to see instant changes to the pics rather than waiting 1/2 a sec for photoshop to process the new info. But your right about the video editing program....its not going to be an everyday thing.

Get the cheapest i5 or i7 you can get would be my advice....

Photoshop isnt exactly that intensive. Shit, I used to run photoshop fine on my old intel single cores..... Any CPU that is a quad-core or higher is overkill in this situation if we are looking at just that single program.

i5-2500k deal for $100 from Microcenter would have been my first recommendation since its so cheap. But I think that ended and of course you would need a MC around you.

Then you want the 3570k or 3770k, no question. All your subsystem bandwidths will be better (Intel platform gets higher ram bandwidth efficiency and SATA bandwidth efficiency for the same ram and same ssd versus an AMD platform) and the vast majority of photoshops functions are still low-thread count bound (with the exception of a few filters).

Whether you go 3570k or 3770k is a matter of your preference in terms of having a cpu that can take more advantage of future multithreaded apps. But the extra 2MB of L3$ on the 3770k helps pretty much everything.

If you're doing anything at all with video (i.e. vegas or premiere), the 3770K is a no brainer. It will be about 30-35% faster than a 3570K, which is exactly the same proportion of added cost.

But don't forget that photoshop does have a few functions that are threaded (i.e. radial blur in CS6), so a 3770K would show improvements over a 3570K if you are using those functions a lot.

But of course it's not really worth it over a 3570K unless like I said, you are encoding video. If you are, even occasionally, I would get the 3770K. It could save you lots of time (depending on how long your videos are).

From what i've seen Photoshop runs better on intel cpu's tho I haven't checked recent benchmarks.

Something from Ivy and preferably a model with HT is what you are looking for.
