recommend a nice office chair for under $250

Costco has this for just a bit above your price range: http://www.hermanmiller.com/CD...2,a8-c1345-p60,00.html

I've only sat in it briefly at Costco, but it has the one feature that I credit with relieving my back pain - a back that moves independent of the seat. A lot of cheap chairs constrict you to a specific angle, which may or may not be comfortable for long periods of time.

i have this at work, one complain is that the firmness of the back is not adjustable. so the viewing angel is not always optimal depending on your activity.

I have since switched it with a steelcase criterion to solve that particular problem, but before you search for it, it's doesn't worth what it's cost.

I remember the chair in Ikea i like was about that much minus the arm rests.

i saw it at costco and was shocked when i saw the price tag.
i had this at work and i cannot see it costing $300. i found the cushioning lacking. it felt more like a chair on sale at staples worth maybe $50.

The cloth version is $299. It's the best chair I could find under $500. Fully adjustable and very comfortable.

really? ikea has quality furniture?
i mean, not to knock ikea, i have a bunch of stuff from them, but generally they are low end stuff.

i'm sick of the staples/OD pleather chairs that tear and just suck after 2 weeks of use, so if it's better than that, i'll give it a shot.

my last 2 have been from Staples. I work from home and sit all day in it. The 1st one was on sale for $99 (not one of those cheesy $99 ones) and lasted 6 years. I only got rid of it because the leather eventually got chaffed, but was worth every penny. This last one was also on sale but at $199. It's a black leather with pillow-top on the seat and made by Sealy. Both leather, swivel, rise, have arms, and tilt back. Couldn't be happier.

Here it is: http://www.staples.com/office/..._Supplies_10051_SEARCH ... it's out of stock in black but the burgundy looks like it is in stock and cheaper.

Anyway, I would suggest you sit in them at Staples (and buy it there instead of online)... they usually have a large selection and everybody's taste in comfort is different.

Does the seat tilt?

and how much do these run?

For a good one from an authorized dealer... about $1000. If you don't buy from an authorized dealer, the 12 year warranty is no good.

You can get the base model on eBay for ~$600, but it'll probably be a floor display model and it won't have a warranty. Those usually run about $750 new from authorized dealers. The base model lacks a couple of the adjustments - seat tilt adjustment, and back tilt limiter. In retrospect the tilt limiter was not as important as I expected; I rarely hit the limiter anymore. The cheap eBay models usually come with the solid lumbar piece. It can be adjusted vertically, but that's about it. They have a more complex lumbar part called PosturFit. It'll run you about $100 separately, which is crazy high for what you get.

Anyway, it's well out of your price range so I have no idea why it was even suggested.

I look at it this way - my Aeron has helped my back more than my chiropractor ever did, and the price of the Aeron is about the same as one chiropractor visit per year for the life of the warranty.

I got a sweet leather chair for $100 at Office Max/Staples that was on display. It was normally $200 but it had a small cut in the back on the leather.

Strengthening my back helps me more than any chair.

that's kinda how i justify an expensive mattress purchase. you spend 7 hours a night on it for 10 years. might as well get something high quality that will give you a good, comfy night's rest.

a chair is something you may spend 5 hours a day in. better to get something with good support and cushioning that lasts, instead of getting cheesy uncomfortable $50 chairs that you have to replace every other year.

$250 is on the low-mid end imo.

It was suggested because after sitting in one for a few weeks one generally discovers that regardless of price, there is no substitute.

Also, even used (plenty of offices going out of business right about now...), they are simply the best chair you can get. I'm sure one could be had at $250.

Yes I know! Pathetic to even think you can get a decent ottoman at that price.

Are you crazy? If you sit at a desk doing "office work" all day, every day, for years, there are two pieces of equipment that make all the difference in the world: a big nice computer monitor, and a great chair. My workstation cost $300. My monitor cost $800 (at the time). My phone cost $450, my chair was $1,100 (I like chrome, sue me). The only other substantial equipment in my office is an HP9100C digital sender at $3500, and the sever at $5,000 ($3,200 of which is software).

So you go exercise to reverse the damage cause by poor office equipment? How about just not damage yourself. Seems like it might be worth the cost?

Many people don't like it, so anyone who is considering it should find a local store that will let them take one home for a few days before making a decision.

Oooooh, thinly veiled insults. 😛
