Recommend a Monitor for my dad

JBT

Lifer
Well my Dads old 19" Sony Trinitron just bit it. So now he needs a new monitor to do some CAD on he doesn't mind CRT or LCD he just wants it bigger than what he had before and around $600 or so. I think the old monitor was something like 17.9" viewable. There will be ZERO games played on this, well maybe mine sweeper for me but thats it =). If we go LCD I will probably grab him one of the cheap ATI Radeon's with DVI. I have looked at this 19" BenQ so far how does it sound? or would a CRT be better for CAD? I thought an LCD would be. Thanks in advance.

Get a 21/22" CRT in that range. You could get a Sony FD Trinitron, or a Mitsubishi tube. If space isn't an issue, I think CRT's are great for the money. (They're cheaper for sure)

Plus, with a CRT in the 21" range, you can set the resolution at 1152 x 864 or even 1027 x 768.

A lot easier on aging eyes!

While a CRT has larger letters, and may be easier to read, it is still much, MUCH worse for your eyes.

Get your dad an LCD, it's what's best for him. If he's not doing any gaming, pretty much any LCD will do.

Really, how so?
Because the raygun shoots into your eyes man! Think of the retinas! 😉 <~~ edit- forgot the sign of sarcasm for those whose sarcasm meters are not working

So any recommendation on LCD's or what? must be 19" or greater. how is the BenQ from my first post? It looks like a good one to me.

I personally do CAD on my 21" monitor. I personally have to say CRT. Workspace is so important when you're working with computer graphics design. LCDs are pretty much limited to 1280x1024 unless you really rake out the cash and get one that supports 1600x1200. While almost all 21" monitors can easily do 1600x1200. I personally use 1920x1440 with large fonts and clear type, everything is easily readable on my 21".

Yeah sunlight shoots into your eyes too, sunlight that reflects off walls also shoots into your eyes. THINK OF THE RETINAS!

seriously.. take a second to think before you post...

Look @ the Dell 1800FP or larger. The 1800's screen is about as large as a 21" CRT and can be had for under $500 and then there's the 20" which runs on special for $799 and must have a Screen size of a 24" CRT and comes with USB ports (my next LCD🙂)

virtualgames0 my 1800FP sits right next to my 21" Diamond Pro 91TXM and there is noit much difference in size. My eyes aren't that bad 😉

CRTs project an image onto the screen using electron guns. These images aren't really 'there' in that they are constantly flickering and slightly moving. While you might not be able to percieve it (although you can with a low refresh rate) this is very stressful on your eyes, in that your eyes can never solidly focus on the letters on your screen. Your eyes are constantly focusing and refocusing, trying to lock on to these projected letters.

Well your light bulbs in your house are flickering on and off at 60 times a second and I have never heard of anyone losing their sight over that, and look at the refresh rate or scan rate on a tv. I have both lcd and crt and find for me anyway the crt for some things is superior.

Bleep

I guess they are that bad

21" CRT = 20" viewable
1800FP = 18.1" viewable
19" CRT = 18" viewable

I took replaced all my bulbs w/ flicker free bulbs a LONG time ago.

Same resolution and I will quote myself
The 1800's screen is about as large as a 21" CRT
. I'm not going to the Optomitrist yet 😉

Putting it in that matchup/perspective sure makes me wonder so I got out the Tape measure as well. I think the reason it may look about to me is because the 21" isn't a flat screen so I just may switch it to the Flat Screen 19" CRT I have here cause getting a lrger LCD is out for the moment 😉

Thanks for the eye adjustment 🙂

I think it's because it's a different ratio. CRT being 4:3 and LCD being 5:4 so CRT is a bit wider as you can see in the pic.

i dont recommend getting an LCD for this. CAD lvl LCDs are not cheap. You want a CRT to do CAD. of course what kind of CAD is he doing?
