I'd like to invest in (or ask for) a KVM switch. What are some good name models without issues like interference, and are good and reliable? I'd prefer the kind with a box rather than all wires. What price range should I expect for a good quality unit?
Sorry, just connecting two systems. The mouse is USB but has a PS/2 adapter, and the keyboard is PS/2. I won't need USB or Ethernet, etc., on it. Standard VGA monitor.
IOGear GCS612A .... it includes audio which very few KVMs do these days. Now I'm sure someone will say, why do I need audio on my KVM ? I work on customer PCs and after sending back one PC with a nonfunctional sound card (driver update hosed the card) I learned how valuable it is to check your work before getting paid.
I'm getting the GCS1732 with my new alienware. Can you tell me more about how KVM switches work? I'm hoping to connect my speakers/keyboard/mouse/monitor up to it, reading specs on it now to see what all it does.
Nothing to really explain. The KVM has two separate bundles of cables for two separate PCs. Each PC gets a monitor, keyboard and mouse cable which you plug into each respective PC. You power up the KVM and then power up each PC. My IOGear gives me audio output as well as the others I mentioned. Using my particular KVM, a simple double tap on the Scroll Lock key on the single keyboard (which controls both PCs) shows you the display on the second PC that the KVM is plugged into.
