Recommend a headset for PS3 and PC

Finally registered after 5 years of lurking 🙂

So after doing a search, I'm even more confused! Well, I need some help and would like some recommendations from actual users here. I personally hate the players with mics with no noise cancelling, always on...etc. If you play Call of Duty, you'll know what I mean (especially on PS3). I never really cared for talking during online play and prefer not to talk for the most part, but with games like L4D, COD and so forth, sometimes I just need to talk. I've used bluetooth ear pieces for mobile phones on the PS3, but it sucks and I don't want to be that jerk with the noisy mic.

What I (think) I know so far is you can use the same headset you would use for the PC on the PS3. Is this correct? Also saw someone recommend a $20 headset you can get at Target, with noise cancelling, but I'm in the belief you get what you pay for, so it's probably crappy.

Just a few features I prefer:
-don't really need fully enclosed ears (need to still hear the wife/kids/phone calling)
-noise cancelling mic
-no preference for wired or wireless
-PS3 and PC compatible
-keep it around $50 if possible (don't need some silly fatal1ty marketing, lol)
-sound/mute controls on wire or headset

Thanks for your help everyone!

the official ps3 bt mic isn't going to work for me, since it's only one ear. I need to hear stereo/surround sound, how else are you going to hear which direction that guy is trying to sneak up on you is coming from 😉 ?. also, the reason I need to hear both ears is because sometimes, I'll play early early morning or into the wee hours of the morning when everyone is asleep, so I can't have the tv/monitor volume up.

Buy this, then use any decent headset/mic combo. I use a non usb version of this, hence the need for an adapter, but most $30 headsets have all the features you want, it just comes down to whether or not it has USB.

PS3 Official Bluetooth Mic. It heard its pretty damn awesome

Is that the same thing as Official PS3 blue tooth headset?

I've used the official PS3 BT headset and while it's decent, I didn't think it was the best sounding.

I got a blue ant BT headset and it sounds better through that, but not sure about the receiving end (aka how I sound to others) compared to the PS3 one.

Look, I might not be able to point to exactly what you want, but I will tell you about the setup I am happy with.

1- Zalman 5.1 ZM-RS6F ($30 < price < $40 on Ebay)

2- Optical out of PS3 and into my USB Creative Audigy 2 NX Sound Blaster The card can give you 5.1 / 7.1 but as far as I have seen 5.1 is maximum for optical on PS3. I have the Audigy 2 NX hooked up to my PC and the headset connects to it

3- As for microphones, it's a hassle. How are you going to use a bluetooth headset while using your 5.1 Surround Headphones? The way I do it is I have a Logitech USB microphone hooked up to my PS3 and is excellent and with a mute button. I borrowed this from my buddy while I wait on my RocketFish USB Mic which I ordered off ebay for $7 ONLY!

There is your best option IMHO. It provides you with a decent sound card, surround headphones and Mic for both your PC and PS3

TBH, I am thinking of picking up a cheap sound receiver if a deal passes by me (Optical ones are cheap but HDMI sound receivers are expensive but who knows and HDMI is a better option can handle better frequencies and 7.1) and take care of all this mess between PC and PS3. As I might need to move this PC to my office but that I can wait on.

I have bad news for the OP: stereo BT headsets don't work with the PS3. So, right away, you can discard that solution.

IMHO, I would figure out a 5.1 headset solution with switchable inputs and then just get some field mics for the PS3 and PC. For the PS3, the webcam has a fairly good one. For the PC, well, there's any number of choices (as someone else mentioned, the Logitech USB mic might be what you need).
