I've aquired a system (T-bird 1200 @ 1400 [overclocked 😀], 512MB PC133, etc), and given it to my brother. He wants to beef up the 3D performance a bit (currently it's a NVidia TNT2 M64 😛).

It's an AGP 4x board so I was thinking about the Radeon 8500 non-LE. (good price on eBay) It won't be used for hardcore gaming, just older games and some America's Army/Empires: Dawn of the Modern World. Yes, I know that the 8500 won't get jaw-dropping framerates on those games, but anything over 10 FPS is good enough here 😉

I have a Radeon AIW (7200-based I believe) and it gets good framerates (15-40 FPS varying) in both those games. I think the 8500 should beat that by a small margin, which is just the type of card he's looking for.

Suggestions?

I'd suggest a Ti4200, they are not that much more than an 8500/9100 and perfrom better and have more O/C ability depending on the brand you get. plus they are still only around $100

If you're gonna cash down on a Ti4200, might as well spend a tad more on a R9600 Pro to make sure you're set on what's new and upcoming.

Otherwise, Ti4200 is pretty good for current stuff, and R9100 is another $30 or 40 cheaper if you find it around $40 or $50.

The 8500 will wax the 7200 severely, so if you're happy with the 7200's frame rates you'll be ecstatic with the 8500.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! I'm going to go with an 8500 or (as a "last resort") a 9100.

Thanks again!
