Recommend a good USB 2.0 burner please

After my Dad took his Polaroid 24x USB back (whew......Dad, ya gotta learn to ask me), he still wants one......

So, it's gotta work with Nero and CloneCD. Backward compatible with USB 1.1 of course.

His OS is W2K.

Anyone have any good experience with a 16x or 24x USB?

Why not just buy a USB 2 enclosure and drive?

I prefer Firewire myself. (No drivers needed either.)

By the way, I'm surprised they even make 24X USB 1.1 burners. Talk about useless.

no they normally say(in fine print) that usb1.1 will be limited to 4X writing.
BTW, I had heard the polaroid 24X has a lite-on inside which is a good drive..

zzzz--Nope. The Polaroid was a BTC. Way many people had problems with it. And, with Polaroid's bankruptcy situation.......

Eug--Yeah, I had mentioned the enclosure route to him, as it would be easier to find a bargain on a good drive. I think he's still mulling it over. Actually, he'll mostly use it with his laptop which only has USB 1.1.....but, he wants the forward compatibility. It is replacing his ailing old Mitsumi.

So far, I've seen a review on the Plex and TDK. Both looked decent. TDK is supported by both CloneCD and Nero. Plex doesn't show to be supported by CloneCD.

and.......found a 24x Lite-On at newegg, which is a bit interesting. Cheaper than Plex and TDK, and, it sorta has a 32 pin EIDE connector, which, I think, allows you to plug, via their adaptor cables, to USB, Firewire, PCMCIA, and I think a couple others. Least this is what Dad has told me. So, since he has PCMCIA on his laptop, might be a good choice.

This Firewire enclosure also includes USB 1.1 and is $69. It has the Oxford 911 chipset for Firewire. I've got one on order but it probably won't get here for a couple of weeks so I can't tell you how well it works. I am running a hard drive with the Oxford 911 enclosure though and it works great in Windows XP. No drivers to install. Same with a different CD-RW enclosure, but which uses the Initio chipset.

Another option for PCMCIA is a Firewire drive with a PCMCIA-Firewire adapter. That'll also give him digital video compatibility for the future.

Just a thought.

Eug--Good suggestion. In fact, he and I both have USB 1.1 external hard drive enclosures, and they are fine for what we need them for. I was even pleasantly surprised that file xfer was not totally dog slow. I can't remember the name of the mfg., but I think my Dad had checked ~6 months ago, and they were supposed to come out with a comination USB/Firewire enclosure.....dunno if it was just a hard drive encl. or not. I'll have to check.

BTW, he is an avid dig. photo buff......no vid, just photos. I know he'll be getting a better dig camera shortly. Don't they have dig cameras with firewire ports, so you don't need a reader? Firewire might be a good way for him to go. Hmmm.....

Thanks lots

So far there are no consumer digital still cameras with Firewire. All are USB. Just plug them into the USB port. I got a Firewire CompactFlash reader simply for convenience.
