Recommend a daily driver that can tow...

What kind of vehicles should I be looking at to tow a trailer with a couple motorcycles? Let's say the combined weight of the motorcycles is between 1000 and 1600 pounds.

Obviously an F350 diesel would do the job... but I'm thinking of something that would be better suited as a daily driver with the ability to tow a couple bikes a few times a year around the country.

Any class 1 hitch can handle that (sub ~2K lbs), which means any car can handle that. Just pick a car you like and make sure you can get a hitch on it.

I don't know where americans get the idea you need a body on frame pickup truck to tow anything.

Yea towing is not just about ability to pull it but also do so while not over heating the trans and having brakes that will work no matter the incline.

A Mid size SUV or Mid size truck will work fine. You can also change the brakes to a good semi-met and add an external trans cooler if you plan to drive in hilly areas.

Yeah, you don't want to screw around with towing. You likely can get a small pickup that can easily do the job. Maybe a second hand Mazda long bed? Someone else mentioned the b series. Great little truck that could handle the task easily and get you good mpg when empty.
