I am looking at upgrading my motherboard and CPU. I have been on a o/ced E6300 for 3 years now. Wondering whats the best bang for your buck CPU nowadays and is it worth it?

well... AMD released the phenom 2 which was simply a better deal then intel CPUs, intel responded by slashing prices making them a much better deal, AMD responded by slashing prices a LOT making them an unbelievably better deal. I expect intel to slash prices again to at LEAST compete, and possibly to undercut AMD...

Right now I am waiting for the dust to settle since every few days bring more price slashing.

well after the dust settles my first choice would be a q9650 or a core i7
dont have much knowledge about phenoms
but hey anything from amd which is 45 nm and a low latency above 6mb cache would be great

I would get a Q9550 and a P45. That would total around $350 and would get you a great computer. If you want to save a little, go for a Q9400 or a PhII for around $300 all told.

I would lean toward Intel as the P45 chipset is rock-solid and there are a lot of choices for you to select from.

a phenom 2 940 combo from ne right now is really tempting... and the 940 has an unlocked multi, so it should be a bit easier to get the extra beans out of it...

Why? System feeling sluggish or you just got the itch?

Bang for the buck CPU = Q9400 for $224 @ mwave
Grab that and a Gigabyte EP45-UD3R for $103AR @ mwave and you're gtg.

OP, I looked at your gaming rig specs and you've got a pretty good system. Perhaps the thing to upgrade isn't the CPU, but your 19" monitor.

You'll be surprised what your 4850 can handle. I was concerned about my system not being able to handle the 24" LCD I just bought, but frankly I can play L4D at 19x12 with 4xAA/4xAF and everything else maxed and it runs great. COD4 I play at 16x10 scaled up with everything maxed too and get a steady 60fps with vsync on.

So in summary, your CPU may be old but it's fine. And if my GPU can handle the higher resolutions, it will be a cakewalk for yours.

Upgraded to a 22" wide about a year ago. Haven't updated that part. Anyway maybe I will wait for the i7. System isn't really feeling sluggish but I usually upgrade every 2-3 years so I don't run into a sluggish system.

I just finished building the rig in my sig and I'm pretty satisfied. Then again, I was coming from an Athlon 64 3500+ :X Obviously the difference is like night and day. The main reason for my upgrade was for my music software. The Athlon just couldn't handle Cubase Studio 4.

Wouldn't it just be best to go Intel and keep the motherboard you have? Seems the cheapest way to go.

I got a older 965P-DS3 and although it supports C2Q I'd just like to upgrade it and the CPU. C2Q's that it supports are the price of a phenom 2. My GF is needing a upgrade and I am thinking of giving her my mobo/CPU combo now. So is the phenom 2 a good choice? Will my DDR2 800 work with it and still allow a decent o/c?

For the most part on AMD chipsets these days:

1) By using a Black Edition microprocessor you simply increase the multiplier without effecting the base AMD clock and RAM speed; and

2) Most BIOSs - primarily the 790FX and 790GX - have a dizzying array of memory adjustments, dividers and ratios that are also integrated into the AOD utility.

That said - it's always good to check OEM memory QVL lists for a specific mobo for both AMD and Intel builds.

Exactly why I chose to go with a P45 mobo after my Biostar TA790GX 128M debacle. Intel has the more solid non-HTPC platform here.

Hmm, my Biostar TA790GX 128M works just great, stable as can be, overclocks fine. Just because you couldn't figure out the BIOS doesn't make it a bad board.

Now, you just serve the Intel Kool-Aid...

@ Sniper82, at this point PhII and C2Q are awfully similar at the same price points, AMD having a slight edge ATM. You can get a really nice mobo for AMD for ~ $100, looks like Intel P45 equivalent has similar pricing.

i find the PhenomII Tri-core 710 w/ 7.5mb cache @ $125 to be the best bang for buck hands down. Surprised nobody's recommending? just wait a couple of weeks for it to be fully available retail.

Well, the OP does have an e6300 OC'd to 3 Ghz, so a PhII X3 710 isn't really an upgrade for him.

IMO, the OP should wait a while, and when Core i7 prices come down or i5 is released, then consider upgrading.

well I'd love to wait but money may be a issue when the i7 comes down and my GF needs a dual core now. I suppose I could just spend less than $100 and get her a dual core and use what I got for now.

best bang e8x00 but over 150$ a chip (dont remember the rates)
with 6mb l2 cache but people say the cache is very high latency
so some people are opting for e5200 or e7200
e5200 wid 2mb cache but wid low latency(atleast thats what i heard)
and i think both r below 100$

and u can go wid a g 31 or g33 series board as ur gf will not oc(girls dont oc and iam ready for a meaning less debate on this )

here e5200 : http://www.newegg.com/Product/...cription=e5200&x=0&y=0
e7200: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819115206
e7300: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819115132

a g33 board
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16813131237R

a graphic card just in case u might need it
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814102792

i personally would recommend a e8400 as they are very good at overlocking but are sort of expensive
but if u ever plan to oc a p45 or a p35 board would best suit u

but remember these boards are lga 775 socket boards the latest being socket 1366
so choice between buying now and later

and i dint mention quads cause u said u need a duo now :p
