Recommend a CPU/Mobo combo please...

... been out of the computer building for a while.

Rebuilding an old computer to give GF parents as 2nd computer.

200 bucks max. Mobo should have integrated Video, Sound & Lan.

Any recommendations?

Well, is all you need the mobo and CPU? Need memory? Better HDD? What are they gonna use the PC for?

The above mentioned is good, but if memory is needed look below:

If I had to guess, it'll be a machine for internet surfing, word processing and lite gaming. A Biostar M7VIG Pro($58) with a retail Athlon XP 2100+($76), then get 512 MB Crucial PC 2100($63) (or go lower and get 256 MB of same RAM ($32)). Total for all of this is $197 shipped.

I'm making assumptions here based on the "parents" thing...guessing its not heavy duty gaming or super video production. The above system is super stable and inexpensive. All of the prices I quoted are Newegg.com (best place to shop).

Also, do they need an OS or do they have Win98SE laying around?

I put my wife's parents into one of these (albeit with a XP1700+) and also got them a new 40GB 7200 RPM Western Digital HDD for a total of $220!

If there is a fry's near you head on over and gte the k7s5apro and a 2000+ for 69.99

If not I reccomend a 1700+ instead (seroiusly...you can save ~40 dollars by not getting the 2100+ and this is for you grandparents. I'm going to guess they won't do much intensive things) for ~40 dollars and if price becomes a pinch even get a duron 1.1-3 for ~30 dollars.

As for the mobo...since it has the be integrated the asus nforce1 for ~70
newegg should have 256meg pc2100 ram for 29.99 also

fry's has a 30 gig hd for 29.99 AR

70+40+30+30=170

all you would need now is a case and you are G2G

Yea, computer will be used for browsing the web and word docs...

I am overhauling at an slot A athlon with 900mhz that is getting flaky... I need new mobo/cpu and I have the following:

18gb 7200 hard drive
Nice antec case w/ 300w power
dvd drive
512mb of PC133 (can I still somehow use this? - I noticed some socket A boards have both SDRAM and DDR)

I really dont want to spend more than 200 total... I guess it depends if I can salvage the PC133 ram

1700+ and a used EPoX board like the 8kha+ maybe. If you want to give them something really nice, 2500+ and 8RDA+ (~$95 and $85 respectively).

The only way would be to have an Nforce2 motherboard that
has Onboard Video: Built in GeForce 4 MX.

Shuttle MN31N = 95$
Aopen MK79G-N = 99$
Albatron KM18G PRO =99$

Retail comes with CPU heatsink and fan.
Buying a 1700XP OEM would be cheaper..but
still the cost of the fan and sink would even out.

68.00$

193$ + 10Ship = 203$

I think you can get an extra 3 dollars..😀

Will the mobo above allow for PC133 ram to be used? Anyone know?

Dude.. C'mon.. give up the old crappy pc133 ram.😱
It's just not worth holding onto anymore because DDR
is much cheaper and runs MUCH MUCH MUCH faster.

The window for using both SDRAM and DDR-SDRAM has
been gone for a while now. I'm sure you could find a board
that could run both, but it will not have 1/10 the speed and
quality of the Nforce2 motherboards. Also it would not run the
XP CPU's with the faster FSB speeds.

It will be cheaper to buy DDR and forget using SDRAM PC133.(<---Read Again)

If the CPU is crapping out why not just buy another?
Athlon (Tbird) 1GHZ (1000Mhz) (200Mhz FSB)3DNow! Socket A 256KFull Speed Cache = 39$ on www.pricewatch.com

How do you know it's not the PC133 that is crapping out? ROFL

OK. I hear ya....

I think I am going to go over budget by $45 and get the following:

Epox Motherboard for AMD Athlon/Athlon XP/Duron Processors, Model# EP-8RDA+
AMD ATHLON XP 2500 "Barton" 333 FSB PROCESSOR CPU- RETAIL
Apacer 512MB DDR PC2700 RAM 32X64 Infineon Chipset CL=2.5 - OEM

+85
+96
+59
+5 (shipping)
-------------------
$245

what do you all think?

If you're going for an nForce2 motherboard with integrated graphics make
sure you use TWO sticks of memory in Dual Channel setup - that will
increase the 3D performance by about 30 - 50% compared to using only one
stick.

The Leadtek-WinFast K7NCR18GM is also an nForce2 motherboard with
integrated graphics, and a little cheaper than the EPoX boards.

There is a difference between the EPoX boards - the 8RGA+ is newer
and the design is better. Supposedly it doesn't have some of the
glitches that the 8RDA+ has. It also supports the 400 FSB better, and
has better overclocking abilities. Also the 8RDA+ does not have the on
board video. So you would need to buy a videocard.

I would highly recommend the ECS K7S5A Pro and the Athlon 2800+. There is a package at Fry's that you get both for $70. But it does not have vid. built in. You could pick one up cheap anywhere. Good luck!

You power junkies crack me up.:disgust: DDR memory and mega Ghz processor for web surfing? Get real folks.

Mister T,
Do what some of the others have said and go for a K7S5A with a XP1700-2000 processor. More than fast enough. Best of all, the MB accepts SDR DIMMS 😀 For video, just pick up a cheap AGP card somewhere. For Sale forum is full of old video cars for a song.

Cheap is good!

There are so many wrong statements and misconceptions here im not even going to bother correcting them.

THAT would be silly. You sed it yourself, this is for surfing and WP. The BIOSTAR mobo i gave you has EVERYTHING you need for them. YES it can use the PC133 and later (if you like) you can upgrade them to DDR memory. 512 MB of PC133 is more than enuf for surfing and WP. Save your $45 and get the Biostar. It's an excellent, stable board, and fills all your needs (including budget).

Your grans arent going to be fraggin on UT2003, save them some $$$ get them what they NEED not what everyone here WANTS.

OMG! dont listen to this one...bad bad advice!!!

There are several boards that run SDRAM and DDR RAM (but not together). The Biostar is one, the K7S5A is another. The Biostar has onboard video, the K7S5A does not.

If you want to use the PC133, go ahead...you will cut your cost to $134 shipped! You can choose to upgrade the CPU to a Barton 2500+ if you want, but I think even that is overkill for what they will be using the computer for. I would still go with my original recc tho...makes a nice system with DDR memory and a nice processor on a good, stable board.

Read about the M7VIG Pro...thats why i linked it...it will tell you all about using SDRAM

I TOTALLY agree with what he sez, cept for the mobo...the Biostar is only bout $5 more than the K7S5A and HAS the onboard video...can't get any agp card for $5!!!! ALso, the reason I suggested the 2100+ is not cuz i think they need the power, just cant get 1700+ CPU in retail form at Newegg anymore...he'd have to shell out more for HSF.

get an nforce2 w/integrated graphics. get a cheap 1700. and a 512 stick of pc-2100. you can get all that for around 200

Re-use the ram, its fine.

And then choose from the following

mwave bundle:
BIOSTAR M7VIG PRO Motherboard Specs BUNDLE W/ COOLING FAN & (AMD XP 2000+; NO MEMORY; NO TESTING) $122.50

or fry's bundle
K7S5A Pro w/ XP 2000 for $60
+ Video Card for $62.5

epox 8rga+, or abit nf7-m.

2500+, maybe cutting it close, but that comes to around $200 before shipping.

i would definitely go nforce2 with vga
