Recommend a cheap, reliable router please.

I'm looking for a router that is $100 or less. Preferrably less.

It must meet the following criteria:

Wired(Wireless not an option)
Have maximum security/firewall I can get for the price.
Descent speed (for the price)

I dont need any special features except for security since I know very little about routers, hackers, the way networks work, etc. I am however, constantly being attacked, and I just found 2 new trojans a backdoor, and a virus today on my HD.

None of the Entry Level Routers would protect you from Trojans and Viruses.

For your purpose any Wired Router would do.

Then you need to keep AntiVirus Active, AntiSpyware, and software Firewall.

And even than you have to keep away from the YYY and other Free, stuff that logic does Not dictate that there is a reason for it to be free.

JackMDS, you said that no entry level routers wil protect me ftom trojans and viruses. Can you tell me which ones will? I might be willing to shell out something extra for such a device.

That is correct, as I posted before None of the Entry Level Products offers such level of protection.

Yeah this is a Combo Modem/DSL Router and a thing to stay away from.

Why? In most cases, the Router part is Not as good and flexible like a stand alone Cable/DSL Router.

If you want a Router with nice interface and many settings. Buy the Netgear WGR 614.

It does few things that other Router do not do and you can disable the Wireless by unchecking a mneumenu entry.

Wow.. this one seems to be a lot cheaper than the one I mentioned earlier. But ,hey, if you say this one is better, I trust you.
By the way... If I disable the wireless, I won't be able to share the internet connection between PCs, since this router shares the connection only through wireless?? Or I am wrong?
Dont want to annoy you, but I found another one I'd liek you to look at. It seems really nice.

:thumbsup: Or a Linksys WRT54G without the speedbooster. I've had one Netgear wireless and one Netgear wired..both went capoot.

You can get a WRT54G for pretty cheap at Bestbuy or pretty much anywhere, but youll have to wait for a rebate 🙁

Router, means Route the Internet I.e. Sharing the Internet, and it has nothing what so ever to do with Wireless.

When the Wireless is disabled, it works like any Wired Router.


Cdubneeddeal as a Wired Router the Netgear is actually better than the Linksys as a Wired Router, it has few capacities that are missing in the Linksys.
