Look at the G1W dash cam. It's only ~$50 and has decent night vision and 1920x1080 resolution. The one thing I'd be worried about is if the motion detection will respond to a person several feet away. I'll check it out in mine if you PM me saying you're interested.

hm.. I guess g1w night vision works thru the car windshield, so it should work thru a window pane?

and yeah, can you see if motion detection works at 20-30ft?
thx

Someone's not cleaning up after their dog.

I want to hookup the webcam to my spare laptop. it'll be on 24/7.
it'll be indoors to record thru my window to the backyard.

recommendations?

that you not do it that way.

the infrared LED's will just illuminate your window, you won't be able to see any detail.

I bought the g1wc.

trying it out now.
and no, the motion detection doesn't work on people 20ft away :(
so I have it on continuous record.

need to buy a 64gig sd card. hopefully it'll last 24hrs at 720p?

My GoPro can do 720p for 2.5 hours, IIRC, on 16 GB at 30 fps -- I remember cause it's one of the few details the tiny LCD. Unless your camera's cutting frames or using better compression, I don't see it coming close to 24 hours.

Good luck.

ok.. recorded for a few hrs.
1080p = 500k per 5min clip

8gig / 500k = 16files x 5min = 80min

so 64gig/500k = 128 files x 5 min = 640min = 10.7hrs

wished motion sensor worked at 20-30ft :(

Motion detector most likely doesn't work through glass. I presume it operates in the IR spectrum (most do). Glass is opaque to IR.

You could always put the camera part outside the window, and disguise it with a plant or something.

Depends on the wavelength of IR used. See summary here:

I have a long-wave camera and glass is definitely opaque. The stuff that comes out of a remote control is pretty shortwave and, IIRC, can go through glass. Not sure what the camera uses. Wikipedia has a summary of some IR sensor designs.

Might as well hijack this thread with my own camera related question.

I want to set up a security camera at my parents' front door. There's a lot of fishy people going door to door around here, and I'd like them to be able to see who's there without the other person knowing. Don't need recording capability or multiple cameras. However I would like a self contained unit (that doesn't need a DVR or computer) that can display the video feed on a tablet (both iOS and Android) and desktop. Any decent ones out there that can do that?

and the IR isn't.
it's just a white light :(

useless for my path behind my backyard, which has minimal light.

all the g1wc see's is a black screen

Sounds like a perfect job for a Dropcam.

@OP's issue: Game Cam looks interesting. I'd be concerned about the IR LEDs, but I'm paranoid.
