I know T-Mobile has some free $25 prepaid crap thats always going on, I'm wondering what the best bang for buck is for this type of stuff. I'm considering the T-Mobile one but I don't really know what phone to get, I don't do texting but would like a somewhat modern gui/app. Should I even bother getting a new phone, or could I just get some used Nokia unlocked phones?

At the moment I don't have a modern phone ( have some 2 yr old Verizon one, cancelled service ) and I'm kinda new and still not sure what the whole deal is with unlocking and what type of services you can use with what types of phones.

I would say I spend 100 or less minutes per month, can anyone recommend a plan?

T-mobile is best bang for buck. Buy $100 card, lasts all year and you get gold bonus minutes.
For ~$20 you can walk out of a T-Mobile store with a prepaid phone and 10 minutes of airtime.

1. buy my unlocked a437 😉
2. buy a tmobile sim card $7
3. buy $100 refill card $88 on the web
4. <$.10/min, lasts a year

It's a cheap Nokia 1208. Works just fine for phone calls, though. You can just take the SIM and swap it into any unlocked phone. I was using a Razr before, but I lost it 🙁

So hypothetically I could get a Blackberry ( damn, I keep hearing about it everywhere ) and unlock it and use prepaid with it?

Yeah.

you can get one for around $100 on ebay...a little less for pearl

I don't know if you could use a Blackberry on prepaid. Don't those need a data plan? You don't get a data plan with T-mobile pre-paid.

I used to use T-mobile for pre-paid, but I was spending $100/mo (1000min). So I got a flexpay plan phone, $66/mo for 1000 anytime min, free N/W, and internet access (no tethering, at least not possible with my phone). Only downside to flexpay is that you have to pay out of pocket for the phone. YMMV on whether you can bring an unlocked GSM phone with you and sign up for flexpay with it.

I actually use a nokia e71 on tmo prepaid. Yea its a bit overkill, but the GPS and other stuff I can install like translators are good. It even worked in Japan without me having to do anything (although I have the e71-2 which is the europe version).

i use the iphone on tmobile prepaid.
it's great! i usually use the $.10 /minute plan. but if i'm going out of town i switch to the sidekick plan:
$1 day for unlimited internet and text. unfortunately it goes up to $.15 a minute
