Wife and I use Verizon. My son started middle school which happens to be a good distance away from home ... and he takes the bus. Figure a cellphone would help let us know when the bus is having problems or is running late (both of which happened recently).

Whats the cheapest phone service out there for such purposes.

Thanks.

Check out that firefly one...its basic and they can only dial a couple numbers. (Not sure what carrier uses them)

If you want a real phone, get the free Nokia. They hold a charge well and take a beating. If it breaks, get a new phone on eBay for like $20.

This is what I got for my 9-year old daughter ... its very simple & holds a charge for 3-4 days, plus has great reception.

LG Migo VX1000 Kid's Phone (Verizon Wireless)

Never used one, but I might be in the market in a few years.

A friend at work has one of those and loves it. He only calls three people (wife, daughter, mother).

LG VX3450 its cheap and has the Chaperone feature built in and doesn't support downloads (which the free Nokia does). Chaperone lets you track the phone using the GPS locator, and you can even setup "Child Zones" where the kid(and subsequently the phone) commonly is that will send you a txt alert when the phone leaves the area.

Only problem with Chaperone is that it requires txt messaging, not a package, just the basic feature unblocked.

Oh and good luck finding the Migo if that one interests you, VZW doesn't sell it anymore.

the 3450 also has a simmiliar feature to the migo where u can only restrict calling to people in the phone book, so overall the vx3450 is more flexible, and as ur kid gets older u can remove the restrictions, keep in mind you will be doing a 1 or 2 year contract.
the chaperone service is 10$ a month and is optional.
