Recommend a 47"-60" HDTV for XMAS gift

My brother and I are going to get our parents a new HDTV for Christmas. Are there any good cyber week/monday deals out there that we should jump on?

Looking with something with these features:

47-60"
Would prefer LED or plasma but not a big deal either way
Name brand not important
No 3D
720p/1080p
No wifi or apps necessary
2+ HDMI inputs
Under $1000

We did see a 55" Vizio at Costco for $850 and it looked ok. I'm pretty sure they had a 55" Samsung 6000 series LED for around $1000 as well.

LCD or led. Plasma is awesome and what I own but no way I'd give my elderly parents a 400w heater. Most older people have a fixed budget and no reason the tv should be cutting into that.

$10? You getting electricity for 5 cents a kwh where you're at? I figured $72 yearly difference at 12 cents a kwh and 8 hours daily if the plasma is getting used 8 hrs a day. Not to mention the extra heat that would need to be disappated by the cooling system.

no but most people dont run their tv 8 hours a day every day

elec is priced about the same here and with my use its 10$ a year, the heat is a non issue, and for whats its worth my Vizio LED LCD puts out just as much heat as my Panny Plasma does

My parents aren't elderly....they're in their 50's. I have a 50" Samsung 7000 series 3D plasma and I love it. Its a little too much TV for them though in terms of features.

I'd prefer to buy something locally since Amazon charges tax anyways. If I could find something that would ship without being taxed then that'd be a plus. I also have a couple coupons to Best Buy so that'd probably offset any difference in price by purchasing online.

Get an LCD/led tv. Your parents probably couldn't give crap less about black levels and they'd probably give it burn in by watching hsn all day and the logo burning in. It'll use less power, give a good picture, and almost no chance of burn in. Plasma is more of an enthusiast set IMO. I own a panasonic plasma and yes it's fantastic but I don't recommend one in this situation.

Even though I'm a plasma guy, I would second this opinion. Even though I haven't seen burn-in on any plasma made in the last four years, you don't wanna have to field the phone call every time they notice some IR and try to explain it to them. Just get the 55" Vizio LED and call it good.

Search for "60PV250" on Dell.com small business.

Then use code 8QPPZTFPRG5406

This code only works on the small business side and expires today (11-29-2011)

Thanks for the link but I think we're going to go LCD/LED. They're living room is very bright with windows so I think a non glass screen would be better

Old people, like my parents, turn on the TV when they get up and shut it off when they go to bed. I bought mine a 40" LED LCD and it's saved them $10 /month.

I have a Samsung 46" LED LCD and love it. I've had it for over a year, no dead pixels and the PQ is awesome. I think the LED LCDs are the best, they're almost too bright.

You must not have seen specs on some of the newer plasmas, my new 60" LG only consumes 145w and has no perceptible heat coming from it at all...my 4 year old 50" LG is another story

Can't really "recommend" this TV since I've never seen one personally, but Newegg has the Toshiba 55G310U (55" LCD) for $799 with free shipping. I've been debating on pulling the trigger myself...

There is an Element 55" LCD for $719 and it is 120hz too if your dad like sports! CHEAP... and good reviews! at walmart that is.

Thanks for the recommendation but I try to avoid Wallyworld at all costs....especially at this time of the year.

Bright certainly doesn't mean better. Of course that's how the big box stores sell so many LCDs. They set the display to torch mode so it looks brighter in the store.

Seems to work. It did with you at least. 🙂
