Recommend A 35mm SLR Camera

I'm looking for a nice SLR Camera to take on my trip to Japan this fall, looking to spend around $300 - $450 (but willing to spend more if necessary) for a body + a lens. I prefer it to be along the lines of Canon or Nikon in case I decide to buy a Digital SLR down the line so I can use the lenses on the either one.

You can't go wrong with either nikon or canon 😀

I am a bit biased since I have had nikon all my life but canon has some really good cameras 😀

Cheers,
Aquaman

I got a Canon Rebel Ti kit for about $270 from a local camera shop. It came with a cheap lense, but it worked well.

I'm an EOS fan myself. Nikon seems to be more expensive and personally I'm not convinced there's a huge difference. It all ends up being preference.

Another thing, I find Canon to be more user friendly.

Nikon N80 is you best bet in that price range, its better then teh EOS rebels

and from personal expirence easier to use, the nikon system is more user friendly for both SLRs and DSLRs

I'm a big Minolta fan myself...

Here's what you need to do: Go to a camera shop and PICK UP THE CAMERAS. The capabilities between the different manufacturers are pretty much the same at any given price point. So it's going to be whatever one feels best in your hand.

Nikon N80 .. mmmmmm .. i wish i had one.

i still use my old nikon fe2 and ill just jumped to the D70. no point in me getting another SLR body.

Nikon. You'd probably be better off to buy it there, although your warranty through Nikon would be worthless once you left Japan.

There's one breaking point that IMO tips the scales in Nikon's favor - they consistently use the same lens interface for the past 40 years. You can take a 50mm manual focus lens off of an old FE body and slap it on the brand-new D70 and have it work. Of course, the self-metering will be non-functional but the lens will work as well as it did on the FE.

There are some very good used lenses to be had on the market at great prices, that are of a vintage that would not work in most Canons or Pentaxes.

elan7e is nice but the eye focusing doesnt work for everyone. I have a canon ae-1 program. Yea it came out in 1981 but there are oodles of really REALLY awesome lenses for it being sold on ebay. I got it nearly brand new for $100 only thing it doesn't have is auto focus but for everything else its great.

I have the 7e and it works wonderfully. The more you train it, the better it works. I can use it with either eye in any orientation. If that fails you can turn off the eye focusing mode. Highly recommended, and of course you can use the lenses on the 10D if you ever buy one.
