The Orange Box (especially if not only for Team Fortress 2 alone), or Serious Sam HD, or perhaps Painkiller.
 
If you want pure multiplayer.. I just re-discovered Quake Live! which is essentially the old Quake Arena. wow.. what fun that was!
Best of all its FREE.

You have your choice of space marines, survival horror, wasteland... Does he like a bit of RPG in his FPS or no? Because there are a ton of good combo games.
 
I would recommend FEAR + expansions. You can try out the multiplayer for free.

I even enjoyed Perseus Mandate. Hell - it's one of the few games I've actually finished recently. It might be the ONLY one.
 
Out of all the games mentioned, I'd usggest the orange Box as the obvious choice - I'd also recommend Dead Space and possibly Mirror's Edge as an option.

Of course, Counterstrike:Source is $5 at steam this weekend - you could call it and early christmas present and call it a day . . ..
 
Buy Counter Strike Source off Steam. Steam has a sale going on and is selling it for 5$!! Weekend sale.
 
STALKER + LURK mod, I guarantee, that will eat your time more than any other game. The mix of challenge and stealth will have you playing an entirely new STALKER. I can't praise it enough, it's so addictive that I've decided to wait for the next huge LURK patch(coming soon) before starting all over, the new patch introduces the ability to spectate Arena matches, new weapons, new weather, and it'll introduce blowouts as well. Trust me, get 1.552 for LURK, you'll have a hell of a time playing other games after playing it!
