Recommed a good PDA

My wife is graduating with her RN and I wanted to get her a PDA to hold the Davis Drug guide and other medical chit. It doesn't need to be top of the line, but I dont' want to get her a POS either. So something upper-middle of the road will do.

Wireless is NOT an option I want since she cant' even have a celll phone at the hospital she works at. Any recommendations?

thanks

dell axim x30 - not top of the line, have all the option you need. SD card, wifi, and at a pretty good price range.

tungsten e=less than 200 ~175 or tungsten e2=$225

Personally I would go with the e2 as the tungsten is over 2 years old, and tungsten e2 just came out; best bang for buck pda's imo

great color PDA back in the day

dude, you need a PDA with an ARM processor, not something that can't handle new stuff. it will crash like crazy with the new applications. welcome to 2005. palm IIIcs go for like $20 now because they're so old.

overturfa: my father, a doctor, got the Sony Clie NX-70 (also known as the NX-70U, NX-70V, or NX-70U/V) and he likes it a lot. in fact, i liked it so much that i bought my own as well, and i'm supposed to be the gadget guru in the family that everyone turns to for new trends 🙂

anyhow, it has a super sharp large color screen, it has a flip screen, and it has a keyboard if desired (you can hide it if not). it also has a little digital camera. he runs Epocrates on it and has no problems whatsoever.

i'd consider this high-end although it's been out for about 2.5 years. it's one of those that was way ahead of its time when it was introduced, but since it's old now, it's probably running for $150 or so (which is a great deal compared to the ~$400 retail it was going for when it was introduced).

more details

you may have to shop around for a good price given that the line is no longer being produced in favor of newer and more expensive PDAs.

X50v. You can get them for $370 or less these days and it will be upgradeable to Windows Mobile 5.0

A Dell Axim X5 might be your ticket. Under $200 and quite functional and expandable. Piel Frama makes a gorgeous case (I got the tan one) and Saunders has a great Rhino Skin case that's pretty die-hard. They're a bit bigger than most PDAs but you get a 400mhz cpu, great battery life, and both SD and CF slots.

Oh, and Axim Site is a great place to learn more.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the excellent recommendations. I ended up going with the Dell X5 special from compugeeks ($188.00 shipped). That looked like a pretty decent buy on a 400MHz w/ 64MB. Especially when you consider all the stuff that comes with the PDA.

A special thanks to Kaido for the link!

I also want to thank you Pliablemoose for clueing me into epocrates.

I ran the demo and just thought WOW! What more could you possibly need? It looks like an excellent product from my uneducated point of view. I'm going to get my wife a 1 year subscription to epocrates essentials. I think she'll love it! Between all of those med math calculatiors built in, the diagnosis and lab sections, and the way it automatically figures out drug interactions, all I can say is DAMN, that's a powerful program for a floor nurse.

Thanks Again ATOT! 😀

Adam..

sony doesn't sell their pda in the US market anymore. 🙁
their pda's are the most innovative out there.

does PPC does come out with a pda that takes picture? I am not sure.

personally, I own the th55. it is the BEST sony ever made. i don't believe any pda out there can beat it in battery life. listening to mp3 will be me about 24 hours. I don't use it much, so with my normal use, i can go on without charging it for a month.

Put down the crack pipe. I know you're cool and all since 1) you're one of 3 females on AT and 2) you're a FireFox whore like myself.

But still PPC > Palm
