Can someone recommend me a good audio recording software? I'll be using my laptop to record an audio source for a talent show.

Another question is how can I pull out another separate line from a mixing board / mic receiver for the laptop? I have no experience with A/V equipments so would somebody kindly tell me the necessary equipments for me to do the job, such as the required adapters and cables? Thanks
