Recomendations for DVD burner?

Well my friend and I are getting a DVD burner. I am looking for some suggestions as to what to get on a $250 max budget. He's got a phillips DVD player (model 710? haven't checked, that's what he told me over the phone), and I always forget which is better -R or +R. I want something that will be able to make backup copies of DVDs, backup copies of Xbox and PS2 games, and of course be able to burn movie files that had been previously ripped to other movie formats. Basically I'm looking for brand suggestions, and -R or +R suggestions.
 
Damn, just going for all the piracy possible? 😉

ANyway, both formats (+ and -) are well supported. - media is cheaper right now
