looking to build my first core 2 duo rig. Need some help
so far I only have cpu picked out Intel® Core 2 Duo E6600 . For board is it better to go with 965 to save money. Looking for these things in a board
lots of usb, atleast one firewire, quadcore ready, raid . I already have nvidia 6600gt so I may want to go to sli in the future.

I might OC , is it worth paying extra for 4mb of cache.
MSI 965
MSI 975

Splash out a bit more and get the Asus P5B-E or Gigabyte DS3 or S3. If you need to save money, go for an E6400; you'll save more money on the price difference than buying an aftermarket cooler and overclocking it to around 3.5Ghz.

so its worth buying 6600 for the extra cost even with 4mb cache, as I will using the pc for lots of video editing. Whats wrong with msi boards ???
How about P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP with 6600 and memory kingston hyperx 533mhz

Nothing wrong with either one of those MSI boards you picked out.

You might want to re-think that ASUS board you picked out... quote from your ASUS link
Supports all Intel Dual-Core processors EXCEPT Pentium D 820 and Core 2 Duo/Extreme.
Good luck.

I narrowed down to these two Asus P5B Deluxe P965 and MSI 975X Platinum . which chipset is more stable better for 6600. Paying extra for 6600 worth the $$ and extra cache, I will be using it for photoshop games etc.

if u buy cheap ddr2-667 value ram by Corsair, Kingston u can easily overclock ur cpu a bit while not spending much money for epensive ram. if u need all those firewire and wifi stuff the p5b series is quite good, stable and ezy to work with.

I already have kingston ddr2 533 (1gb) might get extra 1gig, I never had msi boards. Does having a 975 chipset is really better, what about getting 6600 cpu worth the $$

hm..worth payin for the extra cache? i don think so. but its a bit faster at least on paper, i mean it depends on what u r doin with ur Pc. U may squeeze some extra fps out of it in games..
(though not u exactly since u only have a 6600gt and that gpu is a real bottleneck and btw forget that thing about SLI, u´ll end up cheaper and with a faster card if u just buy an new and up-to-date single card like a x1950pro or sumthin...well i lost my thought here...uhm..
yea..and if u are in hurry while encodin media and stuff u may go for the E6600 since it might speed up some processes some seconds. But in case all u want is an fast CPU for a fair price then the E6300 or E6400 fits the bill. I dont think most ppl would be able to recognize the difference anyway since its only like 300MHz to those E6600. And in like 2 or 3 years all those CPUs are out of date, so my thinking is, go cheap now and spend the money for somethin else, those E6300/E6400 still offer some good value and horse power.
my2cts ;)

ahh...and for that memory, since u have ddr2-533 there is no need to get new memory unless u desperately want to oc, cuz with that memory u cant oc sh!t cuz its 266Mhz memory which runs 1:1 to the 266MHz Conroe Frontsidebus. With ddr2-667 (333Mhz) memory u would achieve depending on the Conroe model, lets take a E6300 with its 7x multi..7x333Mhz 2330MHz, E6400 8x333MHz, or with DDr2-800 (400) 7x400...MHz...u get the idea..

and another hint word is prices are goin to fall in January and there will be some new cheap CPUs...dont know exactly what will happen but just so u know and can chose to wait or against waiting and buy now...

My take on the CPU is that you either go with 6300 or 6600 (depending on your money status)... Go with 6600 if you can afford it. With 6600, you can easily take it to 3.6 as Blling says. 6400 probably doesn't offer enough if you don't care about every bit of overcloking. As far as MOBO, if you need firewire, you can't do D/S3. Asus's P5B is great according to many... lots of features.

I just read this article on anandtech which says that 965 platform is good platform for the E6600 processor in most cases although the 680i and 975X chipsets are well suited to take advantage of the 4MB cache processors due to their higher CPU multipliers and better memory performance . I was thinking of getting p4b delx or msi 975xplatinum .
I can go for 6600 $$ is not the issue ,just want a faster cpu , I am not getting new memory or the video card.
