seeing as mine just died completely mobo and CPU, don?t know how i managed that, but at least my HDs are fine

anyway i need a new one Desktop and im kinda outta the loop so i need your help

want it to be an AMD 64 3000+ - 3400+ depending on $$$$
and a mobo for it
i don?t plan on OCing much, so doesn?t need to be something crazy
I have a Gig 2x 512 of Corsair 2700DDR that is fine, will that work with a A64 or do i need new ram also?
I also need a case and I need a big one, one that will hold 2 CD-Rom drives and 5 Hard drives, and a floppy and not have it all crammed in there

i have an Antec Truepower 430 that is still fine , if it will work with a A64 mobo that would be awesome if not what do i need to look for in a new one?

also does serial ATA make that big of a diff, i don?t mean the 10K drives but on the regular ones?
i currently have 2 40 gigs, a 80 gig and a 120 gig that work fine and would just use them again, and 2 of them have a ton of data on them that i don?t want to loose, i would like to get a new huge drive for backup maybe a 250gig or something,

so let me have it, id say keep it under 600$ it should be doable for that, ill most likely get as much as i can from newegg

So

Quoting my response in the OT thread.

Well, I haven't built an a64 rig yet, but I have been looking at a similar upgrade as you.

1) I looke at a 3000+ and it came to ~645 (but I need new ram and no case)
2) I think you can reuse your ram.
3) I think the asus board base on the via chipset (kt800?) is respected right now, any one else have recommendations on this?
4) I think you can get away w/ your PS too.

Fine.

Case: Lian-Li PC-65 Though, really, most cases have a combined 5 3.5 slots.
CPU: Athlon Mobile 2400+ OC it to 3200+ even with your ram which is still fine.
MB: Shuttle AN35N Ultra

Total cost for a near top of the line system...depending on case: $200-250.

Save the rest of your money and upgrade in a couple years. SATA and A64 are not worth the money especially when drastically new technologies (BTX,PCI-Express) are going to come out soon.

thats sounds sweet, and i know an OCed 2400+ is insanley fast but the thing is i run som many things on the PCI bus that they dont like overclocking, unless that mobo has some insane FSB divider i wont be able to do that insane OC with what is going in there, also the a64 has more longivity IMO because of 64 bit windows and such, but if that mobo will do that insane OC and not kill all my PCi devices especially my TV tuner and my PCI IDE card that that woudl be cool, the PCI IDE card is really finiky with overclocking

Can't you lock the PCI/AGP buses at 33/66 mhz? But tests have showed that a hugely overclocked mobile (2.8 ghz+) is better than a A64 at many tasks.

IDK can i lock it thats what i was asking, ive neved done it so i dont know, is it really easy to do?

whats the likelyhood that ill get mine to 2.8 GHz with air cooling, i dont think it woudl be that good

2.4-2.5 has been reached easily with air cooling. 2.8 is rather unlikely but then again, the chip is only $80.

And you should be able to lock your PCI/AGP buses in your BIOS.

i allready have that tornado and ill be useing it

all from newegg, is that all good?

ill be takeing my CDroms, floppy, vidcard, ram,... out of teh old comp, LMK if anything here sounds bad

also will my current PC2700 Corsair be able to hold a decent overclock or will i need to buy faster ram

The Corsair ram will be fine for the OC. You can try upping the frequency, but the beauty of the mobile Athlon is you don't HAVE to to OC like you would with a locked desktop Athlon.

I guess the only thing I could say is that SVC has that heatsink for almost $10 less. Also, the case is a luxury. It will be nice to have the drives cooled by those two fans and an aluminum case will be light, but you can cram 5 drives in almost any case including $20 ones, so evaluate whether or not the luxury of that case is worth the money. My feelings on buying a nice case like that are mixed. On one hand, you come to truly appreciate a good case over time. On the other, BTX form factor is right around the corner and we'll all need new cases for it. I'm not sure when the leap to BTX mobos will occur, but I doubt they'll be making ATX equivalents, so the next time you upgrade in a couple years, you'll need to sell the case or just relegate this comp to a backup role or give it to your cousin or something. Also, when you pay only $40 for a case, you tend not to be so anal about the little things about it that bug you. Then again, we'll all need to upgrade everything when BTX is mainstream anyway though there won't be huge incentive to do so for a long time anyway so whatever.

Also, I don't think that MB comes with firewire, so, if you need that, make sure you have a pci card or look at a different MB. I got a firewire card with a free AR Pinnacle Studio I got from CompUSA a couple years ago, so I was able to shop for a motherboard without it and save $20-40. Not sure how much PCI firewire adapters are or if you've already maxed out the PCI slots with other stuff.

i hate cramming stuff into cases im doing that now and i think it contributed to teh death of my comp, and ive alyways gotten the cheap cases its time for me to splurge for myself, i plan on haveing this for at least 2 years, and i wont make the BTX jump till AMD has it going strong and IIRC from what i read they arnt getting into it as soon as Intel is so i can wait

I dont need FW i dont have a single device that uses it, all mine are USB 2

Can't imagine it wouldn't handle that easily. I have an old Dell with like a 230w powering 4 drives and a PIII 450. Pretty sure even a 330w Antec would run that setup.

No problem.... Check my sig and I have a true power 430. The 5 SCSI drives are in an external case with their own PSU, but I still have 6 spindles in the tower. The tape backup is also in its own external case, but before I added the last 250 gig drive, it was in the tower on the 430.
