Co-worker that is in the market has something against minivans (personally, I think some are kind of nice) so he's stock with a car that can seat 6 and have at least a bit of cargo room left over. Thoughts?

Pretty much everything Japanese that I can think of for mid size cars are all bucket seats, so looking at a max of 5.

Some North American cars still have a bench, don't they?

Since you don't want a truck, station wagon, or SUV, you're not going to find a car that seats six.

Peoples: Thanks for those that have read the thread and gave constructive replies. I didn't even think of the Subbie. They're darn nice cars too.

To the others: Re-read the OP please. This car is not for me, it is for a co-worker. FWD = Front Wheel Drive. It is not because he "cannot drive a RWD" He's probably been driving RWDs longer than most of you have been alive. It's for economical reasons (smaller vehicle) and better all around traction in the winter months.. and it's snow covered roads an awful lot.

he wants a smaller vehicle that seats 6? wtf? i mean, i guess you could *not* get a minivan, but those are about it. the subie and the freestyle are about the same length as minivans. probably cost more too. i mean, i suppose a caddie 'dts' could seat 6 but it isn't exactly small. same with a lincoln continental.

Tell your friend to buy the same thing his local cops use. They get by in the winter just fine. Avalon does not have a bench in front, as far as I know, or it would fill the bill just fine. The big Ford has a low initial price, gets the same MPG as any large FWD, good reliability, and is cheaper to maintain, thanks to the simple, sturdy chassis. That's the reason it's used for service vehicles in the first place.

I'm trying to think of a vehicle that's FWD, not a minivan, and seats 6, but I can't...

Cops here use a few crown vics, but they are getting old and phased out. They mostly use Impala's and 4x4 SUV and pick ups now. You really think that V8 gets the same milage as say a Century or something like that?

I'm not saying you're wrong because I really don't know, but I'd be surprised if it did.

Close enough. The Avalon requires premium and only has 5 seats. Not to mention the higher initial price, scheduled timing belt replacement and expensive FWD repairs, like CV joints and McPherson struts, electric fan etc.

Almost 85 percent of the 70,000 U.S. police car market is made up of Crown Victorias.

Actually, a used Town Car is a MUCH better buy. Tons of bells & whistles, smoother ride, more rear legroom, reliable, same MPG and great price!

Yup, Outback wagon would qualify. AWD, though, not *technically* 4WD, but it's just as good (personal experience, although we had a Forester).
AWD is actually better than 4WD...

At least Subaru AWD is
Nope, it ain't. Not in an ultimate sense. More convenient? Yes. "Better"? No. AWD is better if the driver wants 90% of the _on road_ advantages of 4WD without having to think about the system. However, nothing, and I mean nothing, on 4 wheels beats a true 4WD setup with front and rear locking differentials and a locking, low-range transfer case.

BUICK Lacrosse, it can be ordered with bench or bucket seats.

CXS rocks.

I will probably be turning in my Trailbazer for one.

Too bad. Once I set aside silly notions of what's cool and what's not (really now, I'm far cooler than most people anyway, SUV or not) a minivan fit the bill, so we got one. Yer coworker sux!

Get a 1998-2004 Dodge Intrepid/Chrysler Concorde with the steering wheel shifter. It's a FWD sedan, that seats 6 and cost pretty reasonable. Trust me I have one.
