I'm building my first new rig in a long time. I'm still rockin' the Athlon XP 2500+. I feel its about time for an upgrade. Heres my basic plan, tell me what you think. Recommendations welcome

I'm looking forward to over clocking this thing to around 3.4 hopefully. I'm not 100% on the monitor, memory, and optical drives. Just tell me what you think. Thanks!

This must a be cost "no limits" sort of build?

Anyway here are my thoughts.

Board: EVGA is not a motherboard company, I would have serious reservations about buying boards from then until they are bit more established. If you can wait for it to become avalible go with the Asus P5N32-E SLI if not the P5B Deluxe is a very good board.

RAM: That Dominator RAM is bit too much marketing and not enough practicality. I would go with this Geil.

Optical Drive: I've never been impressed with Lite-on drives, they are also insanely loud. I would go with Plextor or Samsugn.

Case: Nobody should be buying the PC-6x anymore. The PC-7B is cheap and use 120mm fans.

CPU HS/F: All socket 775 boards use 4 pin PWM fans so I would want a CPU fan to match, for RPM control. The Zalman 9500 AT uses a 4-pin PWM fan.

Keyboard: I think you're crazy :p.

PSU and monitor: Great choice.

Thanks for the info on the 9700 and ram. I think the ASUS board is obnoxious, and even though it makes me cry to have an EVGA board everyone seems to love it and it seems high quality. I wish DFI released a board already.... Any other RAM recommendations? I'll Look into the pc-7b cases, I love the pc 65 tho, can it fit my stuff? I was looking at the Lite-on Drives because they are SATA, anyone know if they are any good or if they work well with the EVGA?

Samsung also do a SATA DVD R/W, the SH-W183. I used one in my brother's PC and I've ordered one to put in my new PC.

Go with the evga board. It isn't technically made by eVGA anyway. It's a good board.
I thought the zalman's had to be modded to sit on the 680i board?? Not 100% certain so you may want to search and make sure. not that you can't mod it but I would rather go with somethng that works right out of the box.

DFI bpards are crap to be truthful!!
You could do much better with a different brand of optical drives!
Good luck!!

How is the Asus obnoxious?, everything on the board is functional, no glow in the dark crap like you'll find on say DFI. The SupremeFX audio and superior chipset cooling are compelling features over the reference 680i (which is all the EVGA board is). Also unlike the EVGA board you'll know you'll have Asus support down the road.

The PC-7 is more less the same case as the PC-6x. The key differences are 120mm fans and no removable motherboard tray.

As far as RAM goes Mushkin, Corsair, Crucial, and Kingnston are all established names in the RAM business.

I suggested the Geil because I've used them a lot in the past and actually used those sticks in a friends build a few weeks ago. They also seem to be one of the better deals around currently.

I'll look more into the Asus board. The things I don't like about it are its audio riser and its $50 price premium. The layout otherwise is real nice though. I hear good things about g. skill ram. The geil looks real good but I am still open for suggestions. What optical drives do you guys recommend? I'm worried the sata drives may not be the top quality or not be very compatible. I haven't been able to see any reviews on sata optical drives.

DFI boards are not crap they are for the enthasiast pc crowd. Sure they diid have some quality control problems but I bet a lot of the problems is a result of negligence than anything else. They are made for the people who know what they are doing and tinker around with the settings...def not for the plug and play crowd.

The audio riser is a very good idea; it removes the audio outputs from the electrically noisy motherboard for improved quality, more high-end boards should this.

And gives you your audio ports beneath the clogged back panel in a PCI slot space. I agree it's a nice idea.
