Speaking as a math graduate that did his senior thesis on the Fibonacci Sequence and the Golden Ratio.....

"Whoop-a-de-do"

I'm a bit of a Tool fan myself and have heard all of this "perfect harmony" cr@p before from one of my co-workers. If you want true math in music check out Debussy or Bach 😀

My point exactly. All this 'cryptic' stuff has all been done before. Nothing to see here folks, move along.

Any idea where this actually came from? A google search just revealed a bunch of "had this forwarded to me" sources.

Honestly, I doubt it. They're just not the kind of band that would pull something like that IMHO.

Edit- and they certainly have plently of "I take this band waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too seriously" fans who would sit around and think about stuff like this. 😉

No. There?s only one kind of Tool fan. The Tool fan who thinks that being a Tool fan lets them into some big secret that nobody else gets. They think that only a select few posses the secret Tool decoder ring. They?d love to believe that all the halfwits who listen to Tool actually don?t get it, but really they?re all listening to them for the same reason

You know, I think this is right and wrong at the same time. After I read this the other day I fired up some Tool on my iPod the next day at work and tried to figure out exactly what it was that appealed to me about them. Lyrically that is. The musical appeal is obvious imo. The reason I came up with is this: The reason we like Tool (from a lyrical perspective) is the same reason we like other bands. Except it's not... Allow me to explain. Most of us are probably drawn to a band lyrically because we can relate to what's being said in some way. We pick music that describes who we are or want to be. Tool appeals to us for just this reason and is the same as all other bands in this aspect. Except it's not the same... because they do a better job at it. Tool covers a lot of the same stuff other bands do except they cover a wider range. Plus, they lyrics are plenty vauge enough to allow a listener to add to that range and read into it what they wish. Tool is a musical Rorshach. Add this to the fact that Maynard is an exceptional lyricicst even if you aren't looking beyond the surface.

Anwyay, that's my $.02. Take it for what it's worth.

I thought this thread was pretty sweet, I being a Toolhead myself.

I think it is necessary to look at Maynard and his music as better music in a now mediocre industry. Most music now is just loud, yelling noise, and don't get me wrong, Maynard has his moments too, but there seems to be more method to his mayhem.

It's sad to see that real talent isn't appreciated as much any more, most new bands just scream their way up the charts and are gone next week; but to your average joe, it's "a cool song" and he "loves those guys" for not much more reason than he found they are popular at the moment. I don't know exactly how much REAL THINKING maynard puts into his songs, but i know its more than most.

Speaking of good music, I enjoy some good classical. You think Maynard's a genius? Try a little Bach or Mozart. Haha, i can't believe im talkin about that in a tool thread, but it's true

P.S. Similar to Dark Side and Dorothy, I watched Metropolis (1920's German Scifi flick) to REALLY LOUD Aenema. It ruled, i suggest you give it a shot
