There isn't a day that goes by that I don't kick myself in the ass for not learning my Mom's potato salad recipe.

How about you guys?

I'm currently trying to dial in a few recipes that my parents make and I just can't get them right. The problem is, they don't use recipes, they just know how to make it and they refuse to actually measure anything for me. I've actually sat there and watched them cook, and take notes etc, and it still never comes out the same when I try to cook it on my own. My siblings will admit that I come the closest out of us in this regard however.

We had an ornery old aunt who made superb banana cream pie. I asked my sister if she had the recipe, and my sister said she asked our aunt once for it, and our aunt said she didn't give it to anyone. (This was no real surprise, the woman was mean and grumpy.)

TEN YEARS later, my sister gets the recipe in the mail from our aunt, out of the blue. My sister had never brought it up again after she first asked. No letter, no explanation, just the recipe. Our aunt died a few months later, and we figure she was trying to make some amends before the end came. We were amazed our aunt even remembered my sister asking about it that one time.

Awesome story. I think your Aunt was happy your sister asked her all those years ago.

My Grandma's cheesecake and her ham gravy. Two of my favourite things of all time I've never been able to re-create them to quite the same awesomeness she achieved.
