a friend just sent a spam email to everyone on their Hotmail address book about some electronics deal. Its a spam email though. But they didn't actually send it.

I looked at the originating IP address and its from China.

Does this mean that someone got into their Hotmail account?

on occassion I will log onto MSN Messanger and I get spam IM's from my little brother...he has changed his password multiple times (even changes them on multiple machines), but they still send them.

I also get those random porn messages saying hey QT, check my out @ xxxxx.com...THOSE are annoying, even after I block them, they keep coming.

I was going to do the special way to spell coming, but I wanted to make it hard 😀

I think it's probably a bot/malware. A few people on my msn keep off-line messaging me with "deals". There were also a few random "Bye." messages with no links or info attached.

I've only received one or two e-mail spams from my contact list. It didn't really bother me, and hey, I got to see her entire list of contacts.

It's pretty easy to spoof an email address.

Does his Hotmail account show the emails in his Sent folder? It would have been possible for the spammer to delete them from the Sent to cover up his path.

I will find out. i'm advising him to change his password. I know that its easy to spoof an email address, but how can you spoof and also get access to their exact hotmail contact list.

Didn't realize the contact list was accessed as well. Was it to a large number of people on his contact list? It could have happened by chance, but that's a slim possibility.

Maybe he signed up for something and used a "tell-a-friend" type future. He may signed you and some friends up for a lot of spam.

But yah, I'd do an spyware scan and change my password.

Heh. I did that to a buddy back in highschool. I went around to about 300 newsletter sites and signed him up for all of them. Needless to say, he ended up getting thousands of spam messages/day from it. This was before the age of spam filters too.
