My daughter has this Leapster Device and I wanted to use some rechargeable AA batteries in it. But they simply don't work (yes they are fully charged).

Do rechargeables not work in some devices? I don't get that. Isn't DC power DC power? How would the device know?

Hmmm really? Well that blows. They pretty much force your hand to buy the $30+ recharge pack then. A-holes.

Just confirming. An example is 9V batteries. The voltage of full charge is at the point where my Beachtek starts misbehaving. So I have never used them.

well see that's the other part I don't get. What's so MAGICAL about the batteries inside their kit then?

Probably different chemistry (Li-ion, for example). Typical non-rechargeable chemistries (there are quite a few, I don't know what's most common, alkaline maybe?) are about 1.5V per cell, whereas NiMH and NiCad are about 1.2V per cell.

what kind of rechargeable did you use? the ac adaptor says 9v 16w, not sure NiCad would be up to the task.

Pure Energy makes a Rechargeable Alkaline that is 1.5V. I don't have any experience with them.

What he said.

Like my Logitech Cordless Elite keyboard refuses to use any rechargeable batteries but the mouse works fine with them.

The guide for that game says 9V 700ma adapter. There should be no reason that a set of good NiMH batteries wouldn't work.
