Recent Windows 7 Updates - PSA, Sort Of

I was out of town over the long weekend and came back to a notice that there were recent Windows 7 updates to download and install. I built this rig over the last Thanksgiving / Black Friday and have had 100% of anything and everything Microsoft felt suited to install on it without any problems. So naturally I let these updates install themselves as well.

One was an updated driver for the HD4000 video onboard the 3570k. I have an add-on PCI video card and don't use the onboard video, but wanted to keep up to date just in case. Installation of it for some reason broke the sidebar gadgets, they wouldn't show up and I got an error message accordingly. I performed the light switch test, uninstalled that driver (more specifically rolled back to just prior to its install) and things again worked as they should. Allowed the updated driver again, which broke the sidebar again, followed by another rollback to things working properly.

The other was installation of Explorer 10. After the reboot my internet connection died. It's just a simple wired connection to a router, but it was lost, giving me DNS and some other errors I don't fully understand. The automated troubleshooter didn't fix it but once again rolling back the installation did, it fixed everything. All of my settings around this are automatic, by the way, no custom tweaking.

I'm not trying to rag on Microsoft or Windows, but FYI if anyone recently or soon has sidebar gadget issues, or loss of internet connection right after the recent updates, this may give you an idea on what to do about it or at least what worked for me. I made it about 6 months without having to hide any updates but that is no longer the case.

I'd recommend re-trying the IE10 update.
After re-boot, try running from a command prompt:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

For the Intel HD4000, might be best to: just disable that feature in bios setup.

when I do Windows upates, I always untick the driver updates and then right click / hide them

I never install driver updates from Microsoft only drivers approved by my laptop manufacturer (the POS ASUS that is)

if all fails, I hope you have a system restore to go back before the point you installed those updates or you can simply reinstall your original drivers

I may try the IE10 update again, just to play with it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yep I normally skip the driver updates but decided to be different this time around, which didn't work out. I'll go back to that method again. And yep again, I did a system restore to before either of those were installed. I've got Acronis backups as well if it ever comes down to it.

All good here, just wanted to mention it in case others saw similiar shenanigans they might know what to look for.

why would a graphics driver for the CPU-graphics install if you have an add on card?
