Recent Price Drops on Phenom 2 940's

the price war goes on.

i was just taking a break & eating my morning fruit bowl & looked
at ZZF. WHOA ! Phenom 2 940's have just dropped in price.

what a deal ! :sun:

but Intel has not yet followed along.

is there something going on, like is Intel having another round of
price cuts Monday ... or is AMD just trying to survive ??

This is killing me. I've been holding on a $20 CPU (X2 4050e) and waiting for 955BE.. But $170 for 940BE is soooo nice. Does anyone have information wrt 955BE pricing?

Have a look here

This tells us a bit about what its global pricing and market placement could look like. A conservative estimate would put this processor at the US $250~275 range. This, bundled with its low platform costs, and the ability to run on existing AM2+ and new AM3 motherboards, could make this processor a competitive alternative to some of the higher Intel Core 2 Quad-based platforms.

Phenom II X4 955 might be accompanied by Phenom II X4 945, though we are not sure if this carries the Black Edition branding, thus being a possible successor to the Phenom II X4 920. April 20 is the day to wait for, if you are in the market for a new machine, or simply looking to upgrade.

Will there be any AM3 mobo's which will take DDR2 RAM? I've got 8GB and have no reason to go to DDR3, in fact I only just got up to 8GB. But, I want the IPC improvements with the 9x5 series of Ph2's.

In the end I may just jump on a Fry's mobo+Ph2 940 BE deal.
Or, are there any super cheap mobo's with a PCI-E 16x lane and 4 spots for DDR2 RAM?

Any AM3 CPU will fit in most AM2+ motherboards so you can keep your DDR2...that's what I plan on doing later on....just dropping in an AM3 CPU into my 790GX motherboard.

AM3 CPU is compatible with AM2+ boards (DDR2) so you can buy a new CPU can just put it into one of the existing DDR2 790FX/GX boards- although with some you may need a BIOS update.

They are listing it as AM2+. :/ Of course, it would make more sense for it to be AM3.

They titled the listing wrong - it is correctly identified in the specs as AM3.

Socket Type AM3
Clock Speed 3.20 GHz
Thermal 125W
Architecture 45nm
Core Voltage 0.875-1.5V
L3 cache 8MB

ZZF does that all the time. :|

It lists something unavailable for an attractive price and changes it later once the product is available. At least it used to. Well, I guess I can't complain much since it also lists 940BE at the lowest price.

I searched some rumors and so far I've learned:

- Official launch on 4/20 (today?) or 4/23
- Price: $230 (replacing 940BE's place) or $270~300
- VID lowered to 1.25V from 1.35V
- Improved DDR2 controller despite being designated as AM3 (this one I know for a fact)

Mostly rumors, but if it's $230 and 1.25V, I think it'll be worth the wait and price premium over 940BE. I hope the current 940BE deal stays until 955BE debuts so I can make a right decision.

You nailed it 😀

The price 'zip-zoomed' to $260 - still OOS
