can i laugh really hard at this? please?
Ironically, that's probably the best component in the system. I have an NEC floppy drive in this system here, and as far as floppy drives go, I wouldn't trade it for the world. It's the quietest, fastest (well, if floppies could be said to be fast) floppy drive that I have ever seen. It's actually slimmer than the usual floppy mechanism, the drive is only about 2/3 as thick as the front faceplate. I'm assuming that the "quiet" mechanism was designed for a notebook drive. Either way, it's very well-engineered. If I could find another one, I'd buy it, just to hoard in case something happens to this one. Yes, it's that good. Much better than Sony or TEAC in my opinion.
Now as far as "ultra fast" goes, I know that some USB floppies offer a "2x" mode, and there might even be some with a "4x" mode. I've also heard it on good word from some random tech geek that I ran across, that certain models of Citizen-brand floppy drives can be effectively overclocked to 4x speeds, which makes them useful for use in high-speed duplication machines. Remember, the floppy controller on the vast majority of modern systems (more modern than Socket5), generally include the ability to run at a 1Mbit/s or possibly even a 2Mbit/s data-rate. (By comparison, the rate for standard drives is around 300-500Kbit/s.) So a 4x mode is possible through the controller as well.
PS. Didn't you know that black-colored computer components always run faster?
