Recent addition to the NYT Editorial Board's tweets (before at NYT)

I love the NYT and I'm don't go around hollering Fake News and such. This is pretty absurd though. It's causing a stir so they released a statement on it:

Looks like she's a bigot if what you post is representative of her as a person. I'll not pay attention to her.

Those aren't recent additions and they aren't the view of the NYT.

Nice smear, though.

Cosby's sexual misconduct wasn't recent either. How far back does one need to go to make what she supposedly said right?

Perhaps these weren't straight up tweets but some kind of sarcastic response?

I've followed her for a while, and it was patently obvious at the time that she wasn't serious. She'll have to cut that out as an NYT editor, but the paper is right to look at it and defend her.

What you didn't mention was that the criticism against her came from racist "alt-right" fanatics trying to get her fired because she's Asian, a woman and liberal. Some of her attackers at once touted their ability to get her fired while simultaneously whining that they'd be blamed for it as part of a "conspiracy."

I'll pull no punches here: hiring her was one of the most idiotic things I have have ever seen a major American press organization do. Seriously? In this climate where the press is under constant attack from the right and the POTUS, they hire someone with those tweets in her recent past?

They probably hired her based on the quality and seriousness of her writing when it counts... wild, I know.

Her lack of seriousness is not apparent from the tweets themselves. If she isn't the bigot she appears to be from those tweets, and was trying some kind of experiment instead, then she's a total moron who was lucky enough that an even bigger moron decided to hire her to work at one of the most respected newspapers in the country. This decision just gives ammunition to the right and it's relentless attack on our free press.

There are other considerations besides being good at the work. That should be quite obvious given the number of highly talented actors and producers who have been fired because of sexual misconduct and/or racism (see Roseanne Barr, for example, who was making the network loads of $$ when they fired her). Not to mention all the journalists.

I don't know I read it and took it as satirical but it's still stupid and they deserve the backlash they get for hiring her. Just because someone may not mean something in a certain way doesn't excuse it.

I'm not in favor of bigotry and hatred expressed "when it doesn't count" If she wasn't serious as some say but black or gay was substituted for white, would that "count"? IMO bigotry is a disqualifier, and there are no qualifications.

Read the thread title again. The tweets are attributed to the NYT. That's deliberately misleading.

If that's so I agree and not acceptable.

As we're on the same page regarding that, what about the tweets themselves? Are they from her?

She says the tweets we sarcastic and that certainly seems like a plausible thing to both me and the NYT. If you don't like them, don't read the NYT. If the NYT eventually decides otherwise they can fire her. Who cares?

The most irritating thing about these threads is the 100% transparent bad faith of conservatives who try and push this outrage. You don't actually care about it and we all know it so why should anyone care what you think?

Context matters. Was it unnecessarily antagonistic? Probably. But there's a big difference between that and genuine bigotry. Also, don't forget that you're being manipulated here -- the actual racists are hoping you'll take umbrage so they'll get what they want, which is one less non-white person with a powerful voice.

Dunno. The account was unverified. We also lack the conversational context in which the tweets were made.

Digging back thru social media history is one of the new tricks of the alt-right, people who are racist AF & proud of it. It's an exercise in "they're just as bad!"
