Recent 2500 Barton purchase? On air? What're you getting?

I made the mistake of posting controversially in the political/OT forums and my personal rating is now 1 of 1. At least, that is the explanation that helps me get through the days here on Anandtech. :brokenheart: .

2 GHz @ 1.8V sounds pretty reasonable. Like you, I don't plan to put crazy voltages through my new chip. Do you have a real need for more or are you seeking that unattainable place in silicon heaven (see below)?

I just bought an Abit NF7-S Rev 2, btw. This is for my first custom build. It is taking me a while to pick all the parts, though. I just read some research into consumer behaviour and it turns out that I am a "maximiser" rather than a "satisficer". In other words, it takes me forever to do research into what to buy and, if I ever manage to make up my mind actually to buy something, I will by then be painfully aware of the product's shortcomings and will never be satisfied.

So, today, I'm going to throw caution to the wind and just buy everything else I need.

Thing is, I'm going to have to use about seven different stores in order to source an Antec SLK3700BQE (or a Sonata for better PSU but maybe too cramped and poor airflow), a Thermalright SP-97 (or I could mod a Zalman 7000 AlCu), a Panaflo 92mm L1A (difficult to find in UK, maybe YSTech or AcoustiFan), Arctic Silver 5 (or should that be 3 or ceramique?), Samsung SpinPoint 160 GB (vibration, reliable?)/Seagate 120 GB, Lite-On LTD-165H (or maybe that's too noisy, could go Toshiba but then not region free), a Matrox G400 from Ebay (but what if the card is DOA?).

i know a few people with locked 2500's but they easily reach 2.2 the only think locked is the multiplier we have hit 2.39 only so far on the locked. On my 2500 i run stable 2.4's at around 43 full load and 37 idle. I use a Thermalright 900-A and a vantec tornado and i have got 2.5's but iu am still working out the problems with gettgin it more stable

if this cpu is a great buy no matter what in my opinion.

I hope you aren't talking low voltage XP-M's such as the ones on newegg, because I am running one right now in a Socket A motherboard and it works great (finding the OC point right now). Unless there are XP-M's that run at lower than 1.45v default, then I haven't even heard of them.

Well, AMD doesn't publish specifications for its mobile chips so it's hard to get definitive answers.

However, the first two items on this FAQ do imply a difference in package size between the Desktop Replacement XP-Ms (OPGA) and the Low Voltage versions (uPGA).

This old thread also has some nice pics comparing the OPGA package to the uPGA.

I believe my XP-M is AXMH2500FQQ4C AQZFA 0340VPAW (only just arrived and I'm not in the same place).
This link tells you how to decode the model numbers of Athlons, although it is not completely up to date. Interestingly, that second Q (in bold, above) indicates a Maximum Die Temperature of 100 degrees C compared with 85 for a desktop Barton. I don't know whether I'll dare use any of that extra headroom but it's nice to have a cushion.

I'm wondering whether I'll have CPUID issues with my NF7-S. Do you think if the proc is unrecognised I might not get all the SSE extensions?

Will let you know when I get things going - probably another 6 weeks from now because I need more parts and I'm also travelling.

I've got a 2500+ and have it at 2.2GHz right now, that on an NF7-S v2.0 and with 1GB PC2700, which is running at 333 (5/6 CPU), which probably could take the 200FSB if I'd slow down the timings. 2.2GHz is the best I can do though - I have it at 1.7V, but it probably could be at 1.65V and I'm going to try turning that down - but after 200MHz the system doesn't load properly, regardless of voltage. Still 450MHz extra isn't too bad compared to my old Palomino. This isn't all with stock cooling, but it runs fairly cold (~38/22C idle) so I think stock cooling would work just fine.

Mine runs at 2.2 with 1.75v, I got a dud Only ever gotten 1 decent OCer in my life, I'm just not taht lucky with them.

the Mobiles aren't a sure thing at 2.4+ I admit but almost 100% will do 2.2ghz and with only a 6 dollar premium over the standard its a no brainer. I'm more than happy with my chip PLus thier unlocked so even if thier was no difference at all between desktop and mobile that enough is worth it

I have one xp2500 running at 2200mhz (11x200) and the other could only manage 2100mhz (10.5x200). They are both running well on SIS748 motherboards at default voltage and stay under 45c even under stress.

I've been doing some checking up, not only here but in other places too. Apparently, the days of "a sure thing" with the Athlon XP is long gone. Being that I'm at 2.00GHz now, with a 200MHz FSB, I can't justify the expense. Especially not with the NF3-250 coming up...before summer, hopefully...should've been out already.

I think I'll sit tight...and wait. You guys rock! Keep on overclocking! I know the ceiling of my current chip is 2.100GHz...I tried higher with 1.900v and it wouldn't budge, and wasn't stable in the least. It's interesting that it'll do 2.00GHz all day long on just 1.700v though.

Yeah I hit a wall with my 2100+ like that, 1.60v at 2ghz. Anything past that and I have the jump the voltage all the way up to 1.675V for stability at 2100ghz.

Just got myself a 2600+ mobile to tide me over till that NF3, I can't wait . 2600+ seems worth it being that it runs at 2.13ghz at 1.45v, though I don't know if it'll run that fast with a bus higher than 133, but I'm hoping.

2500+ with 3500 memory and an nf7-s. I only got this up this weekend. I once booted at 3200+ equivalent and it went fine, but I had a couple of errors. That was in windows ME, and frankly I think that they could just ahve been that piece of garbage OS as much as anything else. This was a default voltage. Within the next week when I get some time I'll actually stretch its legs and I think I should be able to get 3200++ out of it.

I bought a 2500 barton and ecs combo at frys, and installed the cpu in my sons nf7 abit board and at 1.7 v-core i'm hitting 225 fsb at stock multiplyer @ like 2486 mhz on air volcano 11 cpu under load never reaches 100 deg F. unbelievable! I ogt lucky I guess! I think I will steal the setup for my 2nd gaming rig LOL. My son is getting over 14,000 3dmark 2001 se with a ti4200 geforce 4 which is pretty impressive. Wonder what i would get with my xt9800 in the rig? I'm thinking 21,000 plus? score. I test and report back!

Just installed my brother's 2500+ yesterday.
It's like an AQEZA or something like that, anyway it's an 0402 proc so fairly new.
Messed around with for about 30mins and I couldn't get it stable at 2.2ghz even with 1.8v I'll be messing with it more this weekend.

Ok I just tested that xp 2500@ 2486 mhz with my 9800xt video card and pull out a 20,183 3dmark2001se wow not bad? i also did the 2003 3dmark and got 7,130 which is pretty nice! lmk what ya think this is only 100 to 200 points lower then my oc'ed p4 2.8e prescott chip @ 3400 mhz with the 9800 xt kinda makes me mad!:disgust:

are these correct or do they have to be cahnged in order to work better?

*shrug* my barton sucks. Link I've got a great motherboard, very decent heatsink/fan (the temps are not topping mid to high 40's at full load), and my ram is rated for over 200 FSB, and I can't get this bitch to work worth a damn past high 180's or 190 right now (~2050 mhz). I really think something is amiss here, since the average barton is hitting 2316 at the cpudatabase, and this is a very recent CPU.

If I can't get this any higher than the 187 or so would I buy it again? Yes, but my CPU is still sucky at overclocking, although it's fast and inexpensive even at stock.
