Hello, I just lost my Yamaha V373 to a lightning strike. It's an entry level receiver, I know, but now I'm looking to upgrade to something better. I would like to see what everyone here would recommend.

I need at least 5.1, 3D, Ultra4K , Connectivity for 3-4 items, and I need the sound to pass through to TV when receiver is turned off. This is the minimum I need. I don't need to get a top of the line unit, but good quality for my home theater system would be nice. I listen to all types of music, except rap. I use it for TV viewing on Cable (sports, Movies, etc.) Computer games, etc. At the moment, I have an all Bose speaker system.

I've been looking around Accessories4less, but am getting confused. Denon, Yamaha, Marantz. What's good these days?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Marantz. The SR5010 is a good price right now at accessories4less. I got mine last year.

Denon AVR-S510BT is on sale now. I got one last year and have been happy with it.

One thing to consider is what room correction system the AVR uses. This can provide a massive benefit to sound quality with great ease. I have come to prefer the Audyssey system, which is found on the Marantz mentioned above. Denons also have it on all but their lowest end units (note that Marantz and Denon are the same company but Marantz tends to be higher end). The Denon unit referenced by Drako has good basic specs according to your requirements but doesn't appear to have any room correction. It looks like the next higher level up Denon (S710W) has Audyssey (the MultiEQ level). You can get it for $300 at Accesories4Less. There are higher levels of Audyssey, which take more samples (supposed to provide better improvements), can EQ multiple subs, etc. You can find really detailed info about room correction online (either Audyssey or competing systems). But my experience has been that even the MultiEQ level can provide very significant benefits over nothing at all.

Marantz is marketed as a boutique brand more than Denon. Some of their AVRs have more audiophile components like the DACs etc. Though be aware that a Marantz AVR with similar specs will cost more than a Denon unit.

If you get a "Network" AV receiver see how well supported it is. Yamaha dropped support for their HTR 7065 and now only supports a USB flash for firmware updates. Also if headphone operation is important Yamaha Silent Cinema is no where near as good as Dolby Headphone.

I vote the x2200w. That's the one I have. No regrets. You will get a little more power from the amps too.

Thanks guys. Right now I'm looking at the Denon avr-s710w for $300.

One question, will these units pass sound through when I just want to watch news? I don't really want to have them on all the time to watch TV. I only need them on to watch movies, sports, and some TV shows.

i update via usb.
while you can update via network, its quirky, especially with wireless

you can however force a boot to usb firmware update if something goes wrong, dont ask me how i know.....

If you mean the listing for that model at accesssories4less, did you notice that $300 is the price for a refurbished unit (which is all they seem to have, for that matter)?

yes, A4L sells factory refurbs with factory warranty
typically the warranty is 1 year.

they are an authorized outlet for refurbs

just an fyi

but for a 710, last years model, you may find a new one on clearance. (339 @ walmart)

crutchfield has a 720 (newer model) for 350 new

just look around and compare prices. might find a good black friday deal

I wasn't really commenting on whether or not to buy a refurb, it just struck me that it looked like the OP hadn't realized that's what it was, so I figured I'd point it out ...

Umm, it most certainly does have room correction.

Yep, I misunderstood the Amazon specs page. It appears to be a proprietary Denon system as the Denon product page includes a generic "Auto Speaker Setup by Microphone" entry but specifically says that this unit doesn't use Audyssey (which is the only system I've seen used by Denon over the years). Glad to see this general technology working its way down the price chain regardless of the system used. While I have personally had very good experiences with Audyssey, there are a number of other options (apparently including one I was unaware until today!) and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. But in general, they all tend to improve your experience over no correction whatsoever (but if not, you can always turn correction off).
