Receiver not doing true upconverting?

When I got my Onkyo 605 I was under the impression that it would take my ps2 signal and upconvert it to 1080p kind of like my HD DVD player will upconvert my standard DVDs.

I was playing the playstation last night and looked on the TV and it was only doing it at 480p and not the 1080p I was expecting, plus the colors look off than when I watch TV or play HD DVDs.

So does the receiver not actually improve the PQ and should I only use it for audio and plug all my components into the TV directly?

What about my 1080i HD DVD player - does it pass that signal cleanly through to my TV or would it look better plugged directly into the TV?

I could be wrong but I didn't think the 605 converts the signals to 1080P. I believe it does 480i to 480p. The HDMI connections can pass a 1080P signal.

The 605/705/805 all have Converting from Component -> HDMI of:

480i-> 480p or 720p
480p -> 480p or 720p
720p/1080i -> 720p

The 875 and 905 have 1080p upconversion, but those cost more than 3 of your 605s 😛.

I personally have the 705, and like the Component to HDMI of 480p to 480p, but the video processor isnt really that great for upping the resolution to 720p. The 1080p the 6/7/805 refer to is that it will pass 1080i/p Component in to 1080i/p Component out, and HDMI 1080i/p will be output as 1080i/p HDMI as well.
