It wasn't me but my brother received the car amp he bought through the internet. It was shipped through usps. The box arrived damaged on one corner and after opening it discovered that 2 of the corner heatsink fins broke off. He also tried hooking it up and it started smoking so it's pretty much doa. This was mostly due to the seller's fault because it was so poorly packaged. It was just one layer of bubble warp around the amp in a usps box. Any shock the box took the amp took as well.

So I contacted the seller form him and was informed that it was insured for $200 but he said it was $240 with shipping and paypal fee. Shipping turns out to be only $14 and paypal fee is $6. I first thought $40 for shipping and paypal fee is kind of high but it was a pretty heavy item so I didn't question my brother on it. So basically my brother paid $220 for the amp. Would it be reasonable to ask the seller to refund the $20 since the agreed price on the amp was $200?

As for the damage I'm familiar with the claims process with usps so that shouldn't be a problem.

**edit- If it was only 4 or 5 bucks I'd just tell my brother to let it go but this is $20 and that's 2 1/2 hrs of work for him.

The insurance goes to the seller, he is responsible for ensuring that the buyer get a working system.

If a working package is not delivered, one should be refunded what is paid to the seller; then the seller goes after what insurance was purchased.

The insurance should be to protect the seller not the buyer.

It's the seller's problem to get the product to you in satisfactory condition. The purpose of insurance is not to protect the buyer, but it is to protect the seller against accident or negligence by a third-party (e.g. USPS).

The fact that the seller chose to buy inadequate insurance and inadequate packaging is not your problem.

Return the amp, and demand a full refund. No less.

If the seller breached the terms of the insurance (due to inadequate packaging) that, also, is his problem and does not affect your right to a refund.
