What would you do? Would you "steal" it? Would you buy a plane ticket, fly to Amazon HQ and physically return it to ensure you can sleep at night?

i would be on hold for a while and tell them to come pick it up and be done with it.

Ahh, if life were only that easy. I once received a package from some e-tailer that I had never done business with (think it was a Photoshop upgrade or something) to my address, but different name. When I contacted them to inform them of their error, they wanted my account number to get it corrected. Since I couldn't provide them with that, they wanted the order number. Unfortunately, there wasn't any indication on (or in) the package of what the order number might be. Next they asked for the credit card number used on the order. :disgust: So, after making a reasonable effort to return the item, I gave up. I stuck the box on a shelf, and to this day no one has claimed it. Guess that makes me a thief, huh?

are you stupid and not understand what i said? you made a effort to return it. they wanted stuff you could not/would not (no way in hell would i give them any of MY personal info. my CC? are they nuts?) give them.

though what you should have done is write "return to sender" and forgot about it.

if you get a box thats nto yours DDO NOT Open it and send it back. if you do call them and tell them to come get it. thats it.

any ethical person would at least attempt. but hell nobody is saying jump through a ton of hoops.

Why call Amazon? Write return to sender on the unopened box and call the shipper or drop it off at one of their stores. Done.

Calling Amazon is a moronic thing to do.

DID YOU READ THE THREAD AND WHY HE OPENED THE PACKAGE? HE DID NOT KNOW IT WASN'T HIS NAME UNTIL AFTER HE HAD ALREADY OPENED IT! YOUR RESPONSES MAKE IT PRETTY OBVIOUS YOU CONVENIENTLY SKIPPED OVER THE OP'S RESPONSE AS TO WHY HE OPENED THE PACKAGE!

I guess I missed that part. Maybe you should take your own advice.

No wonder people hate Americans. What is wrong with you people?

Someone made a mistake and it is within your power to make right with very little effort. There should be no question. Some of you are going to throw it away, some of you are going to keep it with the intention of stealing it and some of you are going are just going to keep it until Amazon/Shipper/Buyer tracks you down.

It would be one thing if Amazon/Shipper/Buyer continually made this mistake, but it seems to be a one off and could be so easily fixed.

You should be ashamed of yourselves.

The worst part of this is that there are more of you than there are of me and you will all have children.

Yes, thankfully the world is not ruled by the self righteous who feel that their opinions are law.

I am not saying I would have kept the bag, but I certainly wouldn't give someone else a hard time for keeping it. I have better things to do with my time. Like, posting here for example.

lol. maybe then just maybe. the OP should look at the package BEFORE he opens it?

but hell.
"Today, when i reached work, there was a package from Amazon.com (UPS shipping) with my workplace address but different person's name. (We do get USPS mail all the time with several different names b/c of the mailbox shop being here but they are all junk mail).

So I open it up and it is a laptop bag inside ($52.xx cost)...what do I do ? Call up amazon or ups or just wait couple of days or just treat it as Christmas present ? (One of my employees probably signed for it) "

he knows he gets stuff for other people to the adress (again so why open it?). he reads the address and its to a diffrent name. so what does he do? he opens it.

What a pretentious asshat. With that attitude you're going to die alone in a gutter. People hate Americans because of stuck up fuckers like you, oh and fatties... they hate fatties too.

Being at a university apartment I get mail for others all the time. I've moved from different places several times and I always change my address for important mail. We've seen what looks like pretty important things come through here like tax rebate and stimulus checks. No idea who those people are or how to find them, so their shit gets tossed in the trash. If you can't learn to change your address then life sucks for you.

why nto just write "return to sender" and stick it back int he mail box the next day? its not any more effort.

but yeah thats why i hated apartments (lived in one in Dekalb wich is a college town) it seemed like i was getting mail from the last 3 people that lived there. but man nothing beats living in a collage aparment when single and young!

Waggy, have you thought about taking up bingo? If something had my address on it but someone elses name I'd damn well open it to make sure the company didn't mess up and put the wrong name on a package that I'd ordered.

Pretentious - no
Disappointed - yes

That is quite a jump for me to die alone in a gutter because I take the time to do the right thing when a package comes to me when it was misdirected.

It is amazing to me that you couldn't bundle all the letters together (in a bag or an elastic band) once a week or once a month, write "return to sender" on it and leave it at the mail boxes where you pick up your mail. Total time taken would have been minutes each month.

It is clear that the stupidity in this thread is prevalent.

If you happened to order somethign from Amazon and a package arrived with someone else's name from Amazon a few days later than that would be an understandable mistake.

That is not what happened here.

hmm. i really don't know how to respond to that. what the fuck does bingo have to do with anything? and why would people open up something not addressed to them?

For the people who can't change their address maybe. It's not stupidity as I'm pretty sure we all know what to do, it's part laziness and part leaving other people's shit on their own. I have no way of knowing what is important and what isn't, but I can guess. I'm not going to waste the time and money of the post office and whoever sent the letter if it wasn't really important. Again, CHANGE YOUR FUCKING ADDRESS and you'll never have a problem.

ok i guess i can see that. if you order something from amazon and a package comes from amazon with your address but a diffrent name. ok maybe if it was a house.

but this was a workplace wich he says other people get stuff delivered to.

what money and time? don't open the box and put "return to sender" on it. sure with fedex/ups you might have to call them and tell them to get it. but thats what 15 minutes?

the big problem comes when you open it.

Now you're grasping. You're trying to tell me that you are concerned with the time and money the USPS and the original sender is going to have to use to return the letter to the sender?

I'm having trouble believing that...

Dude you are an idiot. IF you don't own it and you keep it when the rightful owner wants it back, then it is theft regardless of how you came by it.

Your wallet example is stupid. If you keep the wallet and the police somehow figure out that you did, they could charge you with a crime.

 yeah sure...

They do.

All from Amazon and all from an employee who hasn't been with the company for 6 years? Having trouble believing he did this for anything other than the wrong reasons...

No it makes you stupid. Write "Return to sender" on the front and call/drop if off at the shipper.

So what's it like up in that ivory tower of yours? I had no option to refuse shipment at delivery because it was left on my doorstep, so I called the vendor who had me open the package to look for an order number when I called to inform them of their error so that ruled out having FedEx come out and pick it up. Since this was not shipped USPS, there was no daily pickup at my residence and since the vendor wouldn't send me a call tag to have it picked up on their dime, I wasn't going to drive 30 miles to the nearest FedEx facility to drop it off.

Another reason for people to dislike our police...never do anything to stop real crime, just giving innocent people criminal records.

After reading that article I can't help but be mad at this line.

"Browne said people who picked up the wallet but did not remove the cash were stopped, frisked and checked for outstanding warrants and released."

If I was stopped, frisked, and checked simply for picking up something I would have presumed another patron LOST, I'd be flipping mad and file some complaints at the least...

lol bullshit.

i find it very hard to beleive they told you to OPEN a package that was not addressed to you and if really did you are a idiot for doing it.

All you had to do is call the shipper (fedex/ups) and say a package was deliverd to my address and the person does not live at the address and to come pick it up and/or call the place that shipped it and do the same.

if they refuse to come get it then no ig deal thats NOT your problem.

but anyway. you all can justify stealing it how you want. I know what i would do and i feel better about myself knowing im not a thief.

I haven't read this whole thread. Dude....it's easy....ready? Write "RETURN TO SENDER" on the box, package, envelope, what have you. Call UPS, and tell them to come get it and someone made a mistake with the address. They will most likely come get it. Possibly swing an e-mail out to Amazon to tell them to expect a package. If nothing comes of it, I think that you fulfilled your obligation to the person who ordered it by contacting the entities who are actually responsible for the package to correct the issue. After that, fuck it dude. Sell it maybe.

The view up here is quite nice. You guys aren't getting it - I have a problem with the OP trying to figure out a way to keep the item. I also have a problem with him complaining that there is so much work for him to do after opening the package. If he never opened it, then returning it would have been relatively easy - write "return to sender" and call the shipper for a pickup. Case closed.

Opening a package that is not yours always creates more problems than just leaving it sealed. If you did so, then that is your mistake and you need to fix it.

All I'm gonna say is that if I made the mistake of using the wrong shipping address and my goods got delivered to an address where I will never see them, I'd be pretty upset because even a great company like Amazon probably isn't going to send out a second one for free... and I think most people here would agree that it would suck to pay for someone else to have what is rightfully yours.
