Reccomended PCI-x cards for $125?

Jim Bancroft

Senior member
I've got ~$125 to spend on a PCI-x graphics card. I was thinking of an Nvidia 6600 or ATI X600 Pro. I've heard good things about the 6600GT, but that's out of my budget, and I'm not sure how much of a compromise the regular 6600 is.

$125 is pretty much my limit, although if there's something out there for $130 that's a big step up I'll go for it. As far as needs, I do some gaming, nothing hard core but I'd like to play Doom III at a decent frame rate at 800x600 for instance. Minimal overclocking if any. No heavy duty TV-out needs either, though I'd like the option if possible 😉

Is the GeForce 6200 worth a look, or not worth it at that price point? Thanks all!

It's PCIe (PCI Express), not PCI-X. PCI-X is a server I/O protocol, and is almost certainly not what you're talking about, because there have never been and probably never will be PCI-X video cards.

I'd read some reviews/benchmarks if I were you. Or use the search function, since this question gets asked, oh, about three times a week.

Hey Matt,

you ok today? You seem a bit bitter today. I have read like 3 posts from you in the last few hours, and you dont seem happy today.

I just thought I would check in and make sure your ok.

Glad to see, im not the only one you yell at 🙂

So Jim,

Heres what I came up with. Anand did some reviews. Heres the most recent review of the turbo cache 6200 from a few days ago.

And heres a slighty older review with the 6200, 6600, ati 300, and 700.

So here are my reccomendations... seems new egg is selling a 6600 regular right in your price range.

THis is $119

Or as the review reccomends the 700 is better. So if you opened up your budget a bit heres the cheapest 700.

This is $166

Let us know what you decide and how you like it!

Eh, just seems like more dumb posts than usual today. 😛

And calling PCI Express "PCI-X" is just a pet peeve.

Chris-- thanks a ton for the advice. I'll check out the links

Matt, sorry about the PCI-x/e thing. Slip of the keyboard, I swear 😱
