Reccomended Cell Phone and Service Plan?

So, I'm considering getting a cell phone. I don't want to pay a monthly fee; I'd rather get something with a "pay as you go" type of service. I'd prefer something that will allow me to call long distance with no additional charges beyond the cost of minutes (or however the billing works). Beyond that, I don't need any fancy features or anything. I'm looking to spend somewhere in the area of $50 for the phone itself.

Any reccomendations would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.

I don't know anything about those pay as you go plans, but I'll just mention what I have right now, for whatever it's worth.

T-Mobile with 600 anytime, unlimited nights, unlimited weekends, 100 free text messages for 39.99.

I like T-Mobile, it's kind of spotty in my area (I live kind of outside of town) but pretty good every where else.

verizon has the best service quality but their phones are a lil ugly in general

tmobile has OK service and nice phones and offer more minutes...

i'd go with verizon tho, saved me a bit more headaches with dropped calls n stuff

For pay as you go cell service, virgin mobile is prob. the best bang for buck cell service. It's only 25 cents for the first 10 minutes per a day. If you go over the 10 minutes, then it is only 10 cents a minute after that. They also use the sprint backbone, so it works faily well all around the country.

The phones are right around your price range and you could get one off of ebay for cheaper. Another plus side to virgin mobile is that the money put into the account last a lot longer than other pay-as-you-go services.

Do the minute charges that you listed apply to both local and long-distance calls? If so, that sounds pretty good.

Now, forgive me for my ignorance: where would I go to purchase one of these phones and how would I go about getting them activated and such, in addition to setting up a service plan? I'm completely new to cell phones .

Hmm, funny, I was just going to recommend them. I got their pay-as-you-go deal. I pay like 20 dollars every three monthes. I don't know what their rates per minute is. I think on nights and weekends it's 10 cents, not including roaming or long distance. during the day it's like 25 or 35 cents a minute. It's fits perfectly in my style as far as usage goes.

Edit, rates are 10 cents for nights(7-7) and weekends, including LD. 35 for standard time, including LD.
