Ok well, I'm looking to make a very cheap upgrade to my k7 system, for about $100 I'm going to get an ECS K7S5A, and an oem duron 1ghz. Can anyone reccomend a quiet and cheap CPU fan for me? I don't plan on overclocking, I just want it to run stable!

i wonder if an alpha pal8045 would be sufficient without a fan. only 30 bucks from svcompucycle, and the ultimate in low noise (none!).

I just put together that MB/CPU combo and love it.

Plays all my games (w. geforce3 ti 200) like a dream.

Only recommendation I have:

Don't get the Dr Thermal Integration Ti V77L

I believed some sites saying it was quiet, but the thing is a 42+ dB beast that almost drove my wife out of the house.

The 70mm fan is not only noisy, no one seems to make fans in that size so good luck finding a replacement if you don't like it.

On the alpha pal8045. I researched that HSF as everone on this site seems to be totally in love with it.

I did not go with it for two reasons:

1. Alpha website said it was not compatible with the ECS MB (after gettting the MB looks like it would fit to me).

2. Read somewhere that the four screw design was hard to install. Also read that the lever design of the TI V77L was easy to install (it wasn't, the lever is useless).

i have the alpha pal8045, and while i cant say if it would fit on the ecs motherboard, i can say that it wasnt hard to install. it was much more complicated than a simple clip, but the directions that came with it were very detailed and easy to follow.

See if anyone has an unused P3 HSF (from retail box 933/1000 Coppermine) they might part with for cheap. I've run a Duron 800 with one of these - only other fan inside the computer was the power supply fan. Ran just fine unoverclocked.

You can get a coolermaster for about $5 on newegg.com or at your local Fry's. These are fine if you don't plan on overclocking.

I picked up a 1.2 duron and the k7s5a from frys the other day. I grabbed a volcano 6cu+ as my hsf. Damn that thing is loud as hell. It's a 7K RPM fan and it is way too loud. I think I'm going to pick up a 60mm to 80mm adapter and throw a quieter fan on there.

I've fallen in love with the SVC GC68 linky. Sure it won't cool as well as an Alpha, but you get the option of swapping to any 80mm fan you'd like (meaning you can use Panaflo L1A's, very quiet). And it's cheap, big big selling point. Besides with the K7S5A you won't be doing any overclocking. The 30CFM fan that SVC ships with it runs at 28dBa which is pretty quiet. And yes, it will fit on a K7S5A.

I also recommend the Alpha 8045 with a Panalflow or other low noise fan. You can find 8045s for about $30 now. You could also try running the fan with a 7v mod or a rheostat to quiet it even further, but I would recommend that you test it and keep a careful eye on temperatures until you are sure it isn't overheating. Another alternative would be the Millenium Glaciator found here for $17.50. The fan is a bit loud, but not as bad as a Delta. You could just mod the fan to run on 7 volts or wire in a rheostat to slow down the fan.
