I bought a Dell Inspiron last year and I hate it. Its heavy, thick, and flimsy.

I've been looking at the Dell XPS line, specifically the M1330. Are those any better than the Inspiron in terms of build quality?

What else should I be looking at? I really don't want to spend more than $1200.

How about the Macbook? You won't have too many options at $1200 as the bulk of lighter/thinner/smaller notebooks cost more.

I'd rather not. I need to use Windows for my engineering applications. I really don't want to be the guy who pulls out a Mac. :D

I just went to the mall to look at the Dell Kiosk. The small 13" XPS is quite nice. The big XPS is like the inspiron with ugly LEDs and stuff.

I'm an engineer and I have a Mac. Just bootcamp it. A lot of stuff can also run in Parallels.

But the other engineers will laugh at me :laugh:

I went to the Apple store tonight as well as the Dell kiosk. I liked the Dell M1330 much more. While the Apple felt sturdier, it was heavier and a bit thicker. I like the Macbooks, but I do think the white one is ugly and I'm not paying $200 more for black.

Hrm...

I think you've found your new lappy! :D

The only one I can think of, that you might like better, is the Sony VAIO TZ, but they're $2000-ish...

I placed the order about 10 minutes ago. :)

I refuse to get the Sony on the basis that its a Sony and I have an irrational hatred for all Sony products, even though they make great stuff. :crazedlook;

Well, at least that PROVES you're an engineer... some of the weirdest ppl I've ever met! :D

You probably hate Real Player too, but in case you don't... CHECK THIS OUT. ;)

I have carried the sony hatred torch for about a decade now. in the 80's you couldnt buy a better walkman, then they sold out and started making cheap parts without lowering prices. i havent bought anything sony in 12 years, and i dont feel like im missing out a bit. that includes everything playstation.

I would agree. I dislike Sony but then again I hate Dell. :)

I have a lenovo x61s, love it.. the only possible improvement I would like is that I want a higher resolution screen, and that would mean the tablet version.. which I'm not that fond of

but... the x series from lenovo, look into them
