I really want to get a dog when I move back to Tokyo in a few weeks, however, my apartment is small. So, recommend a medium/small dog that is good for apartments. Preferably in the top 40: http://petrix.com/dogint/intelligence.html

I've had dachshunds in apartments before and shelties when I was a kid (big house, big yard), but looking for something different. I was thinking maybe springer or field spaniel, as I've never owned a spaniel. Not a big fan of small yappy dogs (other than dachshunds) or poodles (although the ideal choice, I know...). Preferably a less-active bread that is fine with a walk or two per day.

Anyone here own spaniels?

yah, i actually like the regular brown ones. look like little teddy bears, but i just want something a little different. my brother's wife has a poodle, so I know somewhat how they are. Looking for new and exciting dog experiences 😛 😛
 
I have two Australian Shepherds (or Australian Cattle Dogs as they call them on that site) and they are extremely smart. Picked up on commands extremely quickly. They are great dogs too, very active and playful and both of them love to hunt anything that moves in my backyard. They catch squirrels, rats, mice, cats, snakes, etc. Beautiful dogs as well with some of the softest fur I've ever touched.

Yes, I really want an aussie or border collie, but I can't, in good conscience, put a highly active dog like that in a tiny tokyo apartment...
 
French Bulldogs are good apartment dogs; fun, smart, easy going with people and good with other pets. However, they expensive and vet care is costly.
 
I've got a border collie and he is freaking awesome and extremely intelligent. He can catch onto things really quick and has learned a variety of commands already and he's only 7 months old and hasn't had any professional training. According to wikipedia one boarder collie has been able to understand over 1000 english words.

But yeah, he's got a crapload of energy. I let him run it out in our back yard. Only problem is I have to chain him during the day when I'm at work because he will dig under the fence trying to get out. No way can I leave him in the house unattended without putting him in his cage because he will get into something. Luckily though he doesn't cry or bark when we put him in there and if he acts up and we tell him no he stops right away.

I'm not really a dog person at all, but he's pretty cool:

Yeah, I don't blame you, they need room and a fair amount of attention. They are active dogs, mine like being outside all day if I'll let them and they run around the entire time and play, hunt, or just being shady in general 😀
