Honda recalls 25,000 Civics over gas pedals

Improper installation on some 2006 models may cause crash firm says

WASHINGTON - Honda Motor Co. recalled about 25,000 Civics on Thursday because the accelerator pedal was improperly installed on some 2006 models, which could cause a crash.

If the pedal is improperly installed, it could come loose, cause the throttle to stick and raise the potential for a crash. Honda spokesman Sage Marie said there have been no crashes or injuries linked to the issue in the popular-selling vehicle.

The ?vast majority? of the 25,298 vehicles under recall in the United States have not yet been sold, Marie said. A dealer inspecting the vehicles discovered the problem in late September and reported it to the automaker, leading to an internal investigation, he said.

Honda redesigned the sedan for the 2006 model year and it continues to post strong sales figures. The Japanese automaker sold 23,911 Civics in October, up 14 percent from last October, according to Autodata Corp.

The company sold 257,749 Civics in the first nine months of this year, down 1.2 percent from 262,958 sold last year. Honda did not immediately have a breakdown of how many 2006 models have been sold thus far.

The redesign includes a new floor-mounted gas assembly that involves the accelerator. The sedans under recall were manufactured from early June through early October, and countermeasures have been put in place on the assembly line to fix the problem, Marie said.

Owners were being notified of the recall this month and told to bring their cars to a dealership. Dealers will either reset the pedal or replace the assembly at no cost to consumers.

and if ford / gm had done the same thing you would talk about how huge a mistake it was.

it is what it is, it's a recall due to manufacturer defect and yes, in the minds of intelligent individuals it is a factor to consider when discussing quality control of certain auto manufacturers.

Which is precisely why I said I'd buy a Civic over just about any other car in its category.

At least if the gas pedal sticks it will be easy to overcome with the brakes, it's not like Civic engines make any torque anyways...

If American cars didn't suck so much maybe I wouldn't be so biased against them.

you admit you are biased. fact is, i'm willing to lay down odds that american cars aren't NEARLY as bad as you perceive them to be.

but you know what, as long as you are biased that can never be shown.

i love it when someone says, i like japanese cars better because they "LOOK" better. OMFG, there is nothing more superficial and biased than saying something looks better than another because there IS no absolute judge of which cars look better and which ones look worse.

i still think my olds intrigue is one of the best looking cars in its class, but i am also intelligent enough to know that's just my opinion and has NOTHING to do with the quality of manufacturing.

Yes, I am biased and I admit it. Working in the auto industry for 7 years will do that to you though. I'd be willing to bet that I have much more experience with American cars than you do.

Consume reports recently did a study that said cars purchased as a brand new model (the first year they are out) are twice as likely to break down as ones purchased in subsequent years once the model line has matured.

I think Honda just proved this to be very true ;)

That they recalled it proves they are a good company and have the balls to stand up and acknowlege their mistake.

If Ford had this problem, they would probably hide it and wait until a bunch of people die and then have it be revealed as a giant coverup and go bankrupt over it. Or something along those lines.

I hate it when people criticise a company for owning up to their mistakes. They should be given a :cookie:

It's good they caught this early (25K cars) with most not even sold yet. I think this does affect a couple thousand actual customers.

It's a pretty big deal, but as the article said: the vast majority of the cars remain unsold and will be fixed before they are sold. Typically you have hundreds of thousands of cars already on the road before problems like this are discovered. At least the dealer that found the problem gave enough of a damn to look, and now Honda's fixing it.

this is exactly the behavior atot is famous for. ford or gm has a recall, they're horrible companies that steal from babies and push old ladies down stairs. honda or toyota has a recall, and they get a fscking medal.
